How To Handle A Bully – Arizona Bullying Prevention Project

March 12, 2011

Dear Parents, Teachers and fellow Arizonan’s:

Hello, my name is John Nottingham, founder of The Arizona Bully Intervention Initiative – AZ Children’s Bully Prevention Project and author of Making Bully & Victim Proof Kids & owner of Nottingham Sword & Shield Security, ScottsdaleBodyguard.com and USA Martial Arts Phoenix – thank you for checking out my blog.

My mission in life is to help individuals like you cut through the BULL, myths and misinformation about self defense and personal safety, to ignite their individual power, increase fitness and joy in their personal and professional lives.

I believe I am uniquely qualified to help advise you in your journey because of being trained by some of the best of the best and my lifetime of unique work. Not to mention that I have BTDTGTT – Been There, Done That and Got The T-shirt!

For the past 25 years, I have personally helped thousands of men, women and children overcome challenges like bullying, obesity, insecurity, fear, hyperactivity, anger issues, lack of self confidence, slipping grades, and more.

Personally, I was the target and bullying as a child. But Martial Arts changed all that and my grades improved, I earned Black Belt, started teaching, competed nationally, achieved Eagle Scout and became a leader in my church youth group. As an adult, I attended college eventually joining the U.S. Army Airborne and teaching hand to hand combat in a Special Forces Unit. Afterwards, I followed my heart and opened my own martial arts school with big dreams and no money.

I started the Arizona Bullying Intervention Initiative – The AZ Bully Prevention Project to help bully proof and victim proof Arizona Children. My team and I provide resources and training to parents, teachers and children from our unique 5 step method of How To Handle a Bully Without Fighting.

This process has been refined over the last 25 years and has helped thousands of children deal with bullies in their school and lives. We use an empowerment model to encourage positive life, social and problem solving skills, tactical communication, anger management emphasizing peaceful resolutions to bullying.

“When victims stop being victims, bullies stop being bullies.” -Izzy Kalman, Bullies To Buddies founder

My method was developed by putting children’s safety first then school liability – NOT school liability first followed by child safety as with many other programs. It includes elements from Gavin de Becker (The Gift of Fear), Dr. Terrance Webster-Doyle (How to Defeat a Bully Without Fighting), Doc George Thompson (Verbal Judo) and my experience helping thousands of children successfully deal with bullying.

It is the first program of its kind to incorporate Bodyguard Security tactics with the ABC’s of conflict avoidance, anger management, and the wise Martial Arts philosophy PEACE process.

Furthermore, my program won’t leave a child a helpless victim if confronted with physical aggression. Our belief is that every child has a fundamental right for self defense and that they need to be equipped should the need for self defense arise. However, physical intervention skills are only employed as a last resort, and with our unique methods, those situations are less likely to get physically violent.

No Magic Formula for Earning an Authentic Martial Arts Black Belt

March 10, 2011

USA Martial Arts kids demo at an Arizona Diamondbacks game

WARNING:
READ THIS BEFORE YOU JOIN MY SCHOOL!

As I’ve been saying all along on my blogs, in my newsletter, and on the mat, THERE IS NO “MAGIC FORMULA” that will allow you to instantly achieve an authentic Black Belt, super confident kid, ultimate fighting skill or even a ripped, toned body!

So, don’t expect my trial course to be a magic genie that will instantly grant you a magical results…

Let’s be realistic – earning a Black Belt at USA Martial Arts is HARD. You are going to have to WORK if you want to follow my Martial Arts Black Belt Success System plan to achieve your goals.

A vetted Black Belt in most systems takes between 3-5 years. For some systems it may be shorter or longer. This of course depends also on how frequently and how hard an individual trains.

Can You Earn a USA Martial Arts Black Belt?
Is it do-able? Yes! I did it, and I was an insecure kid with asthma with slipping grades in school struggling to pay for expensive martial arts lessons… I had to work twice as hard as others using nothing more than my own guts, a lot of trial and error, some “sweat blood and tears” and the few bucks I scraped together to get started. I took all that experience and developed my Black Belt Success system over my lifetime and have helped hundreds earn the esteemed rank of Black Belt.

There are many people who have joined my school who DIDN’T make it… maybe they decided it was too hard, or the process wasn’t “quick enough” for them, or that they weren’t cut out to be an authentic Black Belt…

But, that’s the beauty of this introductory trial course WEBSPECIAL – before you’re done completing it, you’ll KNOW what it takes to become a success in anything…

And, you’ll be informed enough to make a decision as to whether it’s right for your child.

Yet, there are many people who have taken the trial course, followed the system I outline, and that credit their success to following the Black Belt Success System.

It might be right for you or your child.

We invite you to give it a try today.

Phoenix Black Belts Help Stalled Motorist

October 23, 2010

Leading by example with Black Belt courtesy, members of USA Martial Arts Phoenix interrupt their Black Belt test to help a stalled motorist at Greenway and Tatum

Wear Your Belts In Your Heart, Not Just Around Your Waist

This is a common mantra I issue to my students. At the conclusion of nearly every belt rank promotion students hear me remind them to wear their belts in their heart – not just around their waists. Note the Black Belt testers wearing a white belt – a symbolic gesture demonstrating a new beginning and the importance of being modest and earning one’s rank daily.

Leading By Example
My goal is to remind them the importance of leading by example and being positive role models to others. From random acts of courtesy, kindness and compassion, more is expected of USA Martial Arts students than other sports or activities. That’s because we teach martial arts as a way of life.

Might for Right -Grand Master Jhoon Rhee

Phoenix Do Gooders
On Wednesday, we were running over to a local park as part of our week-long Black Belt test when we spotted a stalled motorist holding up traffic. Before I could even get the words out of my mouth, several of the Black Belts (Instructors) were ready to jump out there and lend a hand. They helped push the car to safety (once they got the guy to take his foot off the brake).

No Excuses – No Quit
After pushing the car, they completed the 2 mile run to the park only to then begin a grueling Black Belt test that required them to do push ups, sit ups, kicks and another 2-3 mile run. It was a proud display of perseverance and indomitable spirit.

Service Above Self
Our students are each required to perform a community service to earn Black Belt as well. It gives them a sense of responsibility and connection to community – to serve a cause greater than themselves. It’s powerful and they will always remember it. It’s also a reminder that Martial Arts is more than just kicks and punches and that the philosophical lessons are integral to the martial Way.

The Choice To Do Good
It makes me proud to work with such good hearted people. Sure, they could have just kept running by the stalled motorist, but they didn’t. What an awesome job I have leading and teaching the martial arts here in Phoenix. It was good to see the children at the test get to witness their martial arts older brothers jump out there and lend a helping hand. I hope it makes a lasting impression.

Thanks to Hit Girl, the pint-size heroine of Kick-A$$, we’ve figured out that anyone can be a superhero given the right training. Founded by sixth-degree Black Belt and former Army Special Forces operative John Nottingham, USA Martial Arts doesn’t wimp out by teaching just karate or aikido. The school’s intense program combines tae kwon do, Filipino stick fighting, jiu-jitsu, kickboxing, and other self-defense techniques to aid you in your endless struggle against evil (or your growing gut). If you’re worried you won’t be able to keep up, rest assured USA has starter classes for those who “just couldn’t find the time to exercise,” so even if you’re a couch potato, you’ll be kicking ass like Hit Girl in no time.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
MMA Legend Dan “The Beast” Severn
Teaches Arizona Police Defensive Tactics

PHOENIX, Arizona (September 01, 2010) – Helix Tactical and USA Martial Arts honor local law enforcement, military and first responders by offering free defensive tactics training by UFC Hall of Famer and ASU wrestling legend, Dan Severn.

The training will be available from 6:30-8:30pm on Wednesday September 1, 2010 at the grand opening of the newest location of Helix Tactical at Tatum and Greenway roads in North Phoenix. The event will include a tribute to local law enforcement, military and first responders as part of the festivities.

“It is time that we demonstrate our appreciation to those who serve our country and community. We are honored to have true MMA Legend and Competitor, Dan Severn, to be a technical advisor, subject matter expert and instructor,” said James Harter, owner of Helix Tactical. “We have to face it, MMA is the fastest growing sport in the world and effects the way people are resisting officers. Dan provides the experience, leadership and skill set to help guide this integration of proven and highly efficient skills into defensive tactics for officer survival and the humane handling of suspects. It is designed to counter the bad guys’ MMA skills. It is also a tremendous confidence builder for officers to learn and stay healthy.”

Dan Severn, still active as a fighter, has over 95 state, national, and international wrestling titles under his belt. He has captured the attention of fight and wrestling fans all over the world since his 1994 debut in the Ultimate Fighting Championships [UFC]. Dan is known as “The Beast”, a name given to him by Jim Brown during one of his many fights in the UFC. The Beast’s world class wrestling skill, commitment, and desire have provided the foundation for his success.

The native of Coldwater, Michigan, Dan is the only Triple Crown UFC champion in the sport today. He began his career in the fight game as a Greco-Roman and freestyle wrestler in High School and continued as a collegiate wrestler at Arizona State University. Dan captured many local titles and several national and world titles, setting eight national records in his early career. He was inducted into Arizona State University’s Wrestling Hall of Fame at the end of his prestigious collegiate career.

After college, Dan continued on a quest to be the best amateur wrestler in the world. Numerous competitions from 1982 to 1994 took him to Japan, Hungary, Cuba, France, and Turkey. On each trip, Severn captured another title. Dan also secured 13 National AAU wrestling championships during those years. The Beast also tried his hand at coaching wrestling at ASU and Michigan State University as he continued to compete. He accepted all challengers in any no holds barred, or professional wrestling events. On May 17, 1996, Dan was crowned the UFC Superfight Champion in his home state of Michigan. He defeated “The World’s Most Dangerous Man”, Ken Shamrock to regain the title. In 1999, Dan reached a milestone by competing in his 4000th match.

In addition to his wresting career, Dan also holds Black Belts in the sports of Sombo, Judo, and JiuJitsu. He is a UFC Champion and has been inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame. Dan has also appeared on 48 Hours, 20/20, The Gordon Elliot Show, Nash Bridges, and many commercials.

John Nottingham, Co-Director of Training at Helix Tactical and President of USA Martial Arts says, “This is a great example of how Helix Tactical integrates multiple disciplines to provide the best solutions for our customers. Our expertise in tactical training, real life simulation and education made us the right choice for Arizona’s training programs. The grand opening event will introduce many locals to our services.”

HELIX TACTICAL is a mobile and on site training company specializing in training military, law enforcement and first responders in protective fields. Providing risk management, officer development, firearms training, defensive tactics solutions and more; Helix Tactical also provides customized training systems to provide today’s Police and Security with the capability to conduct realistic, high intensity training exercises and mission rehearsals designed for officer development and safety.

The Down and Dirty Truth About USA Martial Arts

May 8, 2010

The Down and Dirty Truth about USA Martial Arts Paradise Valley Scottsdale

Yet another Karate school opens in a shopping center in Arizona. The latest is located at Tatum and Greenway roads in PV on on the Scottsdale/Phoenix boarder in the Albertson’s Center. While they have an impressive website, is it all it’s cracked up to be? You decide.

Here’s a fact sheet on USA Martial Arts:

o In Arizona since 1992. This is the latest location. Other locations included Mesa, Chandler, Ahwatukee, Gilbert, Peoria and Glendale.
o Required background checks on all instructors.
o Required instructor training of over 500 hours.
o Do not allow kids to teach classes
o Require instructors to pass regular PT tests
o Require First Aid Certification including AED and pediatric
o Require instructors to lead by example (and have thrown out instructors who refuse to live up to the standards – some of whom have schools in the area)

No appeasing the weak for the sake of a dollar here:

o Require push ups
o Require breaking boards for belt rank advancement
o Have a Master conduct all belt testing at a separate event
o Require cleanliness, modesty and ban foul language or bad attitudes
o Dismiss students who might misuse what they learn
o Fail students who do not make requirements of the set curriculum
o Do not allow 6 year olds to demand being called Mr. or Mrs. or promoted to an adult Dan grade title of Black Belt. Instead children have their own ranking system and can earn a Junior Black Belt but are always required to respect adults.
o Require students to actually be able to defend themselves in order to be promoted to Black Belt.

You can see all of this in person and by speaking to the parents and students. USA Martial Arts offers an open door policy to watch or try any class free without obligation or binding contract. The instructors encourage visitors to do background checks on them and visit other schools. The advertising also guarantees 100% satisfaction or money back.

So for some, this old school approach to earning rank and having discipline may seem too harsh. For others, it might be just the right place for their children to train. The best way to find out is to stop by and meet the instructors and try it.

You decide.

You can investigate them online and check out their website claims here:
