Step 1. Find The Right Karate School for You or Your Children
Do You Have a Karate Kid?

One of the most important aspects of selecting the right Karate School for your Children is to find the right martial arts instructor. The Karate Teacher needs to be good with children, have the ability to communicate clearly, be a good role model and have a passion for teaching Karate as more than just kicks, blocks and punches.

Traditional Karate | Freestyle Karate | American Karate | Korean Karate | Japanese Karate |Okinawan Karate

Each instructor has different abilities just as each Karate school has its own specialties. Some specialize in life skills, self esteem, self defense, tournament competition or cultural martial arts and Japanese, Okinawan or Asian tradition (Shotokan, Shito Ryu, Goju Ryu, and Wado Ryu).

The best way to find out is to visit local Karate Dojos and see the Karate Instructors in person and then try a class or trial course.

Look for a Karate instructor who leads by example because the teaching staff of Black Belt instructors will certainly follow suit. The experience a child has in the beginning will often determine how far as well as what belt rank they achieve. That is why it may be worth a little extra investment in tuition or driving a bit further to a better school with more experienced instructors.

Depending on your goals, it may be wise to seek out an authentic Master (Usually 6th Dan and higher with 25+ years of experience) to learn the philosophy and intricacies of the art.

Step 2. Create a Goal Plan for Karate Success

It is important to set realistic goals to achieve the benefits you want. Poor attendance or lack of consistency in training can sabotage a beginning Karate student’s experience. If you don’t feel successful or see results, it can be discouraging. Be patient, consistent and dedicated to doing your best in every class. Focus on improvement rather than perfection and celebrate all progress.

Step 3. Commit to Your Plan and Plan for Contingencies to Succeed in Karate

Everyone can go to Karate class when it is easy or they are new and excited. It takes the realization that the most important class you or your child will ever attend is the one that they won’t feel like attending. Dedication and discipline are just like muscles and must be exercised so they grow stronger. Without consistent practice and encouragement, those attitudinal attributes grow weaker. Resistance builds strength – and that goes for a child’s attitude and spirit as well. This is one of the great life lessons that martial arts such as Karate can teach. These Karate lessons will carry over to other children’s activities and sports as well. That is why Karate and other Martial Arts Black Belts are so sought after by coaches and respected by teachers.

Step 4. Follow The Guidance of Your Karate Instructors (Sensei).

Most successful people from corporate executives to professional athletes have coaches. Role models, coaches and mentors help you overcome many of the common pitfalls that would prevent you from reaching your goals. They can provide motivation and inspiration as well as share wisdom in how to overcome the typical obstacles along the way.

Remember too that Karate should never be used as punishment or linked in any way to punishment. Since it is a form of discipline, even though it may be a privilege to learn, connecting any negative experience to it may have unintended consequences (like causing a child to feel defeated or even quit) and it may be destroying a healthy, positive tool for developing great children. Keeping it part of “life education” is a key to success and especially earning the esteemed Karate Black Belt.

Step 5. Review and renew your Karate goals.

Adjust attendance to accommodate other sports, homework and activities. Remember that martial arts such as Karate is a lifestyle as well as a sport, so maintaining attendance is key to a child’s success – especially Black Belt. Discuss your goals and other concerns with your Karate Teacher to have the best chance of success. Good Karate teachers will support your child’s development, goals and dreams.

Martial Arts Schools (How Do I Choose?)

Martial Arts Schools (how do I choose?)

Brought to you by http://USA-MartialArts.com and http://freeutahkarate.com

The Most Important Aspects of Selecting a Martial Arts Schools are as follows:
There are a myriad of martial arts styles, karate, kung fu, taekwondo, jujitsu, judo, aikido, tai chi chuan, kenpo, MMA, and kendo, to name a few. Some have passed through the centuries, while others have been modified and are relatively new.

However, the style of martial arts should not be your primary criteria in selecting a martial arts school. Instead, you should consider what is emphasized in the martial arts program.

The Appropriate Martial Arts Emphasis for Children and Families

For children and families, martial arts instruction should primarily be focused on the personal-development aspects of martial arts – rather than the fighting aspects.

All of the martial arts develop self esteem, self confidence, focus and concentration, self discipline, physical fitness and self defense skills. An emphasis on these benefits of martial arts is what you should look for rather than seeking out a specific style of martial arts based on the techniques used for kicks, punches and/or throws.

You should also consider how the martial arts programs are taught. The practice of martial arts is largely about the development of self esteem so you want to find a martial arts program where the instructors emphasize the effort as well as the result.

Self esteem comes from having real successes in doing something you care about. For many children and adults, martial arts can be an important activity that helps build self esteem but only if the martial arts instructors acknowledge, recognize and reward the efforts of the martial arts student as well as their accomplishments and successes.

To summarize – the most important two criteria in selecting a martial arts school should the level of emphasis on personal development and an approach towards teaching that is focused on building self esteem.

To evaluate a school against these two criteria, you should discuss them with the martial arts instructor and observe a class, paying particular attention to what is emphasized and how classes are taught.

Other Criteria To Consider in Choosing a Martial Arts School

Curriculum

Is there a structured curriculum?
What are the opportunities for leadership? For competition?

Values

Many martial arts schools have a student creed that students must memorize. Does this creed agree with your personal values?
What is the school’s reputation in your community?

More Class Considerations

While watching a class, observe the interaction between students and instructors very carefully. The atmosphere should be formal and professional, but the students should be having fun as well. Evaluate if the students seem happy and motivated.
A good instructor can instruct 50 students with control and ease, but for an inexperienced instructor, 5 students might be too many.

Martial Arts Instructors

What kind of training do the instructors have? Just because the instructor has a black belt does not mean he or she is a good instructor.
The martial arts instructors at the school you select must be positive role models for the students and should be able to establish an immediate rapport with your child.

Martial Arts Facility and Safety Issues – The school should be welcoming and comfortable for both students and parents.

Is the facility clean?
Is there a large matted area where students can train?
Is there a viewing area for parents?

Selecting the right martial school will have a positive influence on your child’s development. We certainly hope you select USA Martial Arts of Phoenix Arizona or Personal Mastery Martial Arts of Sandy Utah.
We are masters of making it easy to get started. We are experts at making the learning fun and exciting. We are committed to being role models of honesty, customer service and good old fashioned value.

The Karate Kid (Kung Fu Kid) Premiers and The Martial Arts Industry Holds Its Breath

June 11, 2010

“Wax on Wax Off”

Thousands of martial arts enthusiasts, practitioners and instructors are eagerly awaiting the release of the Karate Kid this weekend. For those of us who have been in the industry for a while and uphold the traditional values, we’re hoping and praying that this movie will have a similar effect as the original Karate Kid starring Pat Morita (Miyagi) and Ralph Macchio (Daniel).

In the mid 80s the martial arts industry saw a massive influx of children into local martial arts schools due to a fundamental shift in the popular perception of martial arts.

“Sweep the leg!”

The original Karate Kid captured the hearts and minds of audiences everywhere with the classic new kid on the block underdog story. It was the Charles Atlas 97 pound weakling gets his revenge against the bully with some clever twists and deeper lessons.

“An enemy confronts you he deserves no mercy.”, John Kreese (Martin Kove) of the Cobra Kai dojo

Most importantly, the original Karate Kid movie demonstrated the dignity, wisdom and life-affirming values found in classical martial arts when taught by a caring and qualified teacher. This is a far cry from the violent image many of today’s parents hold of martial arts from more recent promotion efforts of events like the UFC and cage fighting.

Rarely promoted are the lessons of good manners, compassion, honor and restraining self control, the hallmark of a classical (traditional) martial arts education.

Instead of ego driven, glory-seeking, knuckle-dragging inter-male violence jockeying for position on the social ladder, the Karate Kid revealed that our biggest battle is within ourselves. The wise Master Myagi helped Daniel Larusso learn that our greatest opponent is our own fears, insecurities and self-doubt. When we begin to understand those things, we are better equipped to handle other challenges in life such as bullies.

When the first Karate Kid demonstrated the respect, honor and age-old classical martial arts lesson of “Karate (Martial Arts) is for defense only”, mothers everywhere saw how Martial Arts helps improve confidence, attitude, and develop inner strength to avoid fighting. The coming of age tale showed how the mild-mannered Miyagi used his brains over brawn to stop the bullying and fighting while helping Daniel earn respect. The teen character Daniel ultimately learns that one can find honor in avoiding a fight and winning others respect.

Through the teaching of his eccentric mentor Miyagi, Daniel learns not only karate, but also important life lessons, such as the importance of focus, balance, dedication, hard work and the belief that martial arts training is as much about training the spirit as the body.

My hope is that the new Karate Kid movie starring Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan restores some of the dignity and honor to martial arts. I hope that viewers see the education and martial arts life affirming values, rather than making a silly mockery with clown-like antics or unnecessary violent messages.

Perhaps it is overly optimistic to place such high hopes as this on a film simply designed to entertain and sell movie tickets and popcorn.

“It’s not how many times you get knocked down, it’s how many times you get up.”

However, I’m still holding out hope that the film can recapture some of that magic in a bottle as the original Karate Kid film and deliver a positive message that resonates with children and parents alike.

Martial Arts stands ready with the solutions to many modern-day problems for children including: handling bullies, resolving conflicts peacefully, combating the pediatric obesity epidemic and instilling patriotism, manners, integrity, honor and respect.
