How To Do Taekwondo
Martial arts Karate for kids – Let your little one get his kicks
How does your child spend the rest of the day after getting back from school? Chances are that they prefer to stay indoors, slumped on the sofa with a bag of chips in one hand and the TV remote control in the other. It’s been proven that children these days spend more time playing with gadgets or watching television and less time engaging in some physical activity outdoors.

Testimonials
Gabriel really enjoys coming, his concentration and focus as well as his ability to pay attention and listen have improved amazingly. I find it is great for his confidence too.

The Secret to Taekwondo Kicking

October 26, 2011

Bruce Lee Learned Taekwondo Kicking From Grandmaster Jhoon Rhee

Taekwondo is one of the most systematic and scientific Korean traditional martial arts, and instills much more than physical self defense, kicking and punching skills. Some know it for the sport division featured in the Olympic games. However, the majority of men, women and children practice Taekwondo for a healthy, fun recreation and the amazing benefits of the traditional and cultural aspects of the art. It is a discipline that reveals a way of enhancing our spirit and life through correct training our body and mind.

Bruce Lee Kicks with Jhoon Rhee on a Beach

This trademark kicking style is featured in various Korean martial arts including Kuk Sool, Hwarang Do, Hapkido, Hanmudo, Yudo, Tang Soo Do, Choi Kwang Do, and major organizations such as the World TKD Federation (WTF), the International TaeKwon-Do Federation (ITF), the American Taekwondo Association (ATA), as well as many others.

John Nottingham Pulgueksa Temple Korea

The secret to advanced Taekwondo kicking is found in three essential components.

First, a foundation of correct form and proper mechanics must be built. This is developed through specialized drills and training routines that build strength, control and proper body movement. In Taekwondo, special emphasis is placed on core strength, hip and low back conditioning to enable the range of motion for proper kicking. The conditioning provides a harmony of strength, flexibility and timing. Together these form a potent combination that is the foundation for exotic, practical and powerful kicking techniques.

Flexibility drills such as dynamic stretch kicking, passive stretches and P.N.F. (resistance/contraction) stretching help improve range of motion, control and the ability to place kicks with pin point accuracy. The dynamic and plyometric kicking speed drills condition the muscles and nervous system to be explosive and lightning fast. This usually consists of breaking down the kicking mechanics into its sub movements, such as lifting the knee to chamber a kick. The drill would include starting from a sparring stance, chambering the knee as rapidly as possible for a set period of time – perhaps 30 seconds. It is followed by a rest cycle then repeated.

John Nottingham Flying Side Kick Punch

Another tool for developing advanced kicking is the variety of kicking paddle drills. A kicking paddle is a Taekwondo practicioners target used to simulate a moving human. The Taekwondoist has to anticipate and attack the target while in motion, adapting to ever changing distance and timing. They learn to point the knee, stay relaxed and adopt a highly versatile sparring stance to be able to change quickly and capitalize on opportunity.

The next secret to Taekwondo kicking is the use of the hip. In the above photo you can see Black Belt Anthony Miles of USA Martial Arts Phoenix speed breaking bricks with a spin side kick. The power in his kick comes from momentum, torque (from turning the hip) and great side kick mechanics (alignment). He does a great job of lining up his kick to drive through the bricks and concentrating his force in a small area.

To increase range of motion, a Taekwondo practicioner will strive to stay relaxed to enable efficient movement. Next, they will adopt a versatile stance and make use of their arms by swinging them to initiate faster adaptation, rotation, torque and mobility.

The advanced jumping and spinning kicks are developed by practicing a variety of jumping and spinning drills. The common trait of all great kickers is the willingness to practice consistently over time. Perhaps this is the greatest secret of great kicking.

One of the formulas many competitors use is to practice every kick they know ten times on each side for a session. Another classic method is to throw 1000 kicks a day. Of course, the best training protocol depends on your level, body, goals and guidance from a qualified teacher.

In Korea, most children practice Taekwondo kicking with a spirit of play. They accumulate a high volume of kicking repetitions in addition to regular Taekwondo class attendance. The demonstration teams also use friendly competition to encourage advancement and higher levels of difficulty and skill.

Choosing A Martial Arts School For Children in Phoenix Arizona

May 31, 2011

Choosing A School

Taekwondo for Children - Karate for Kids

” The children’s program at USA Martial Arts Phoenix is outstanding and provides an environment for children to develop as individuals and leaders with strong character and values.”

– Michael W., Phoenix AZ

Things to consider when choosing a Martial Arts School

A martial arts school is a unique thing within our community – more than a place for fitness and social activity, it is a place designed to promote personal growth and to enhance character development. When looking for the right martial arts school for yourself or your child, we believe you consider the following factors:

Traditional System Foundation
Look for a school that teaches has one traditional or classical art as their foundation- karate, judo, aikido, taekwondo, kung-fu, etc., not several. An old martial arts proverb says that the hunter who shoots at two rabbits misses both. As a beginner, you want to focus on one thing and learn it well, perhaps before moving on to another art. It is unwise and ill advised to be a, “Jack of all trades and Master of none.” Also be leery of schools that claim to teach their “own style”. Every legitimate school from Karate, Taekwondo, or Kung Fu creates a unique curriculum but it should be based on proven methods and decades of experience. Think of it much as you would a university.

Martial Arts Style
Style srefers to a way of teaching a specific art – not to a differentiation between arts. Karate, taekwondo, and kung-fu are different martial arts, not different styles. In the same way, the Japanese/Okinawan arts of judo, jujitsu, aikido, sumo, kendo, iado, yudo, etc. are different martial arts, not different styles of karate (although this has become a common way of describing it to the uninformed). The major styles of karate are Shotokan, Shorin Ryu, Goju Ryu, Shito Ryu, Wado Ryu, Isshin Ryu, and Uechi Ryu. The major traditional styles of Taekwondo are Moo Duk Kwan (Tang Soo Do), Chung Do Kwan, Song Moo Kwan, Ji Do Kwan. Today Taekwondo is commonly referred to by its political affiliations namely, WTF (Olympic or World Taekwondo), ITF, and ATA. Wushu is the generalized inclusive modern name for Chinese Martial Arts (commonly referred to as Kung Fu). Some common Kung Fu (Wushu) styles are Hsing-I, Wing Chun, Hungar, 5 Animal, and Shoalin Kempo- but there are hundreds.

Martial Arts Rank System
Most martial arts today utilize a ranking system for its practitioners. In the Japanese martial arts (karate, judo, etc.) the ranking system usually consists of black belt and a variety of colored belts leading up to black belt. These pre-black belt ranks usually start with white belt and end, just below black belt, with brown belt. The ranks in between are signified by several other colors that may vary from school to school. Our pre-black belt (or class/grade) ranks are as follows: Gold, Orange, Green, Purple, Blue, Brown, and Red. Black Belt ranks range from 1st degree through 10th degree black belt. Various titles are assigned according to leadership responsibility, much like Military Rank. Tenth level Black Belt is generally reserved for the founder of the system, the one person at the top of an organization of an art, or a life long practitioner of the art. Legitimate systems usually require a minimum age of 35 with 25 plus years of intense practice for the rank of “Master”. There are only a handful of true 7th, 8th, 9th, and 10th Degree Black Belts in each martial art through out the entire world. And all known legitimate martial artists at this level are above 50 years of age.

Martial Arts National or International Organizations
Does the school belong to a recognized national or international organization? Most good schools are part of such organizations. This is one indication but not necessarily a guarantee.

Instructor Credentials in Martial Arts
All legitimate martial arts instructors have credentials to verify their rank and/or any titles they hold (Master, Grandmaster, etc). Some questions you might ask include: Where did they get their rank? Did they promote themselves? Or were they promoted by people within their own organization who are beneath them in rank? A person can’t give himself a BA, MA, or Ph.D degree, nor can they be promoted to such a degree by someone who only holds a BA degree themselves. In the same way, a person can’t promote themselves to any degree of black belt. And they can’t be promoted by people who aren’t qualified to make such a promotion. Unfortunately, self-promotion and promotion by an unqualified “board” are very common within the martial arts. To be considered legitimate, a person must be promoted through their black belt ranks by someone who is at least two black belt levels above them (In our system, only a Master can promote an individual in any rank). Ask if the instructor belongs to the same organization that issued their rank? (They should. Many move upwards in rank by switching from organization to organization.) Do their credentials seem to make sense? Ones that may not are a 25-year-old instructor claiming a high black belt rank (above 4th degree) or rank in several different arts. Does the instructor have any teaching certification beyond their rank certification? A black belt doesn’t suddenly make someone qualified to teach. They must complete an additional program to learn this skill.

Instructor Personality for Teaching Martial Arts
You should take special notice of the instructor as he teaches. The instructor may not be the person who greets you or even who gives you your first lesson or two – often called introductory classes. You want to make sure the personality of the instructor suits you and/or your children.

Sport vs. Self Defense Martial Arts
Do they offer, recommend, or require competition? To be useful, students must be paired up for dual practice. Do they utilize adequate safety gear for these sessions? How much control is utilized? We do not, but some schools require full or semi-full contact during paired sessions, which we consider dangerous, especially to children.

Martial Arts Weapons
If you are interested in weapons training, be sure to ask if the school teaches them. Not all schools do. The traditional Japanese/Okinawan weapons are not actually designed as weapons. They were originally farm and fishing tools used by Japanese and Okinawan people in their daily jobs. And, since real weapons were banned, they were forced to use these tools when attacked by those with real weapons. Other Martial Arts weapons have a history all their own including military traditions. At USA Martial Arts Phoenix, we offer training in these ancient and contemporary practical weapons to those in a Black Belt training program. Mastery of each of these requires different physical and mental skills. As such, they round a student out, provide great motivation for practice and develop unique attributes and extraordinary control and timing. Some require greater concentration, others greater strength, etc, making them a great training tool for children, who become quickly bored.

Watch or participate in a class
Can you watch a class before you or your children join? Many schools discourage observation. We encourage it. We also offer an introductory class for a nominal fee to allow potential students to get a feel for our school before committing to a program.

Program length
It takes time to acquire skill at self defense and develop the life changing qualities a good martial arts school seeks to instill in its students – making them healthier, happier, and more accomplished. (These qualities include self control, self discipline, self confidence, and self esteem.) Something acquired quickly is usually forgotten just as quickly. As a result, most schools require a year commitment. However, there may be other options.

Inquire at the school.
Final Thoughts Keep your eyes open and don’t be afraid to ask questions. It takes hard work, dedication, time, and willingness to grow to achieve a black belt in any art or system. And it takes the right instructor, art or style, setting, and the support of ones fellow students to reach that point. In some schools, students have a (negative) competitive attitude towards each other, especially newcomers. Avoid these. Some schools also spend most of their time entertaining students, playing games, or teaching bogus techniques that don’t work in real situations. You want a school that will help you or your child reach their goals in life, not hamper them.

Make sure you feel comfortable with the school (including the instructors and fellow students) before taking the first step and making that commitment.

AZ Neighbor California is Releasing up to 45,000 Prisoners. Self Defense Teacher Helps Phoenix Gain Peace of Mind with Self Defense

May 25, 2011

Arizona’s neighbor California is releasing 30,000 to 45,000 prisoners due to overcrowding. That leaves many Arizonan’s asking “How many of those criminals will flee to Arizona and the Phoenix area?” Security Specialist and veteran self defense trainer John Nottingham says, “If you are concerned with personal safety then this program will help you gain peace of mind. It makes a great gift to those you love and provides unconventional tools for self defense and personal protection.”

Women’s Self Defense | Street Self Defense | Reality Based Self Defense | Krav Maga | Jeet Kune Do | How To Protect Yourself | How To Do Self Defense Fast | Bodyguard Self Defense Security

Before you think Nottingham is just a local self defense instructor, take a closer look. John Nottingham, or “Master Nottingham” as his students call him, has taught military, law enforcement and over 10,000 students in his career. He is not only a multiple Black Belt holder with a 6th Degree Master Black Belt, but is a bodyguard trainer and owner of a security and executive protection company. He served in a Special Forces Reserve Unit and was asked to teach Hand to Hand Combat to Airborne Rangers, US Army Green Berets and other elite forces as part of a limited experimental unit program in the early 90s. Nottingham has also trained and taken students to national and international events in Korea and China.

Women’s Self Defense Phoenix | Arizona Personal Protection | Self Defense Seminar Arizona | Phoenix Self Defense | Cave Creek | Scottsdale Self Defense | Self Defense Seminar Phoenix |

“Much of our self defense advice flies in the face of conventional training and teaching. We use an empowerment and educational model that makes the training different than most places. We’re certainly different than law enforcement in our advice. We train them- we should know.”

What Strategic Self Defense & Personal Protection is NOT:

o Krav Maga, Jeet Kune Do
o Corner Dojo Karate or Taekwondo
o Highly stylized or retrofit techniques
o Complex moves & martial arts techniques
o Easy to forget techniques requiring tons of time to practice
o Rehashed old info you already know
o Typical self defense advice like “be aware”
o A politically motivated “women’s empowerment” or “man hater” course disguised as self defense
o Guys with big egos scaring people into fighting
o Misguided sport fighting such as Muay Thai Kickboxing or Brazilian Jiu-jitsu

What SecuritySafe | StreetWise is:

o Simple, but little known, techniques to end a physical attack instantly
o Tactics, techniques you already know and can instantly use (We’ll show you know where & when to use them.)
o Bodyguard tactics to avoid, prevent, thwart, deter would-be attacks
o Advanced Threat Assessment tactics to recognize and derail dangerous situations
o Military grade physical intervention techniques and the appropriate use of violence
o Mental, physical and emotional tools to use under stress of an actual criminal attack
o Clever tricks to see attacks coming before you lose the advantage
o Criminal mindset and typical tricks, tools and trouble spots
o Professional, respectful treatment with measurable results
o When most trainers tell you to “fight” we’ll teach you to evacuate
o When most courses will tell you to prepare to fight, we’ll show you how to end it
o Designed so that almost anyone can do it – even if out of shape

“Most self defense instruction available to the public is well intentioned but we would argue often, misguided, unfounded, dangerous or just silly. The premise of our training is to use proven tactics for protection to give our clients peace of mind. We’ll show you techniques used to protect the President that can work to protect you and your family. Training gives options and reduces stress that not having training denies.” – John Nottingham

Nottingham must be doing something right considering that his programs have been used by agencies and individuals all over the world. His concepts and training programs have spun off numerous imitators and other trainers. If imitation is the greatest form of flattery, Nottingham should feel proud.

“This course is an introduction with sound principles for protection (self defense). You won’t earn a Black Belt in a seminar or learn to fight like Jet Li or for the UFC, however you can instantly apply some of these [self defense] strategies to improve the level of safety and security in which you live your daily life. Clients tell me that is worth it’s weight in gold.”, says Nottingham.

PART I
The first part of the course is taught in a casual and relaxing classroom setting complete with a multi-media presentation, statistics, insight into the criminal mind and bodyguard tactics. It even includes crime footage of actual assaults and a discussion and analysis of options.

PART II
The second part is hands on, step by step instruction without the ego or drill Sergeant attitude. Male and female instructors help clients learn simple effective they can instantly use the moment they walk out the door. Since these are moves they already know, they don’t have to worry about remembering them under duress, when it most counts.

Psychological Impact and Benefits of Martial Arts for Children

March 29, 2011

Psychological Impact and Benefits of Martial Arts for Children. Scientific research backs putting kids in martial arts.

Martial Arts is Great for Children – Scientists Agree!
Many parents are reaching out to help their children have a brighter future with martial arts. From developing bullying prevention skills, safety skills for anti-abduction, building confidence and a positive self image to building a solid foundation for healthy minds and bodies, martial arts is giving children an edge.

Taekwondo | Karate | Kung Fu | Martial Arts is More Than Kicks and Punches
Martial Arts has numerous benefits beyond the kick, punch, block and throw. From establishing a class structure that helps children learn to follow directions, develop social skills, focus and complete tasks to rewarding positive behavior, it can have powerful lasting effects.

Taekwondo, Karate, Kung Fu, Jiu-Jitsu, Judo, Aikido, regardless of style, classical Martial Arts schools offer character education. Martial Arts classes also teach anger management, verbal diffusion skills, critical thinking and problem solving in addition to solid self defense. So not only do children get in better shape and have healthy activity for their bodies, but they benefit mentally as well.

Martial Arts Gives Children an Edge in School and Life
This goes a long way for parents looking to give their children an edge in university acceptance, scholarships and being prepared for a rapidly changing future.

The cultural aspects are another often overlooked benefit of martial arts for children as they increase cultural awareness, teach and reinforce foreign languages and provide unique opportunities.

Can Doing Martial Arts Make You Smarter?
Research also shows brain development in both hemispheres from using the body and mind in unique ways. Martial Arts has been linked to increased intelligence, memory, creativity and concentration.

Beyond School
Parents today are recognizing that the public school system is not enough. Millions of parents are bringingmartial arts, as we teach here, into their children’s lives to supplement their education.

Psychology Today on Martial Arts for Children
Carleton University, in a study reported in Psychology Today (January 1985), found that children in martial arts have a lower level of anxiety; an increased sense of responsibility; a decrease in the willingness to take foolish risks; a higher sense of self-esteem; higher level of social intelligence; and were less likely to be radical.

Parents report these five important benefits their children experience in our USA Martial Arts Phoenix school:

1. Martial Arts reward system improves children’s self-esteem
Martial arts are not like team sports because the emphasis is on developing the individual’s self-esteem not the team’s winning record. The belt system is the key. When kids earn their belts it gives them a great sense of accomplishment that really improves the way they feel about themselves. Nobody sits on the bench in martial arts class.

2. Martial Arts program teaches children discipline.
One of the things parents appreciate most about our classes is the improvement in their child’s self-discipline. We have a wonderful staff of patient instructors who love to work with children, but are also very clear about boundaries and safety. We enforce good rules of behavior in class, and we expect the same good behavior at home and in school. This is why so many parents are choosing martial arts to improve reinforce good character.

3. Martial Arts activities channel children’s aggression
Many doctors, counselors and psychologists actually prescribed our school for treatment because of the positive outlet it gives the kids for all their energy. Martial Arts track record for success in this arena is well established.

4. Martial Arts confidence classes enhance children’s self-esteem
We believe confidence is one of the most important things we can give kids. That’s why every class we teach has confidence-building drills included. Children develop a greater self concept because of a feeling of accountability, healthy boundaries, structure and consistent reward. Children also develop their emotional intelligence and discover their individual gifts and abilities.

5. USA Martial Arts program teaches children essential self-defense skills
Our program teaches practical, proven self-defense methods. We also teach the kids that the moves they learn in class will work, so they don’t go home and try them on their sister, or neighbor. They develop a sense of empathy and learn when and when not to use their martial arts skills.

Develop a More Focused, Confident, Fit Child with Martial Arts in Phoenix

March 14, 2011

Attention Phoenix AZ Parents!

“The Secrets To Develop a More Focused, Confident, Self-Disciplined and Physically Fit Child Revealed To Phoenix Parents.”

From:
John Nottingham, Owner- USA Martial Arts Phoenix

Dear Friend,

As a parent you prepare your child for the future the best way you can everyday, but what about developing the core “Character Lessons and Practical Life Skills”: The Self-confidence to speak up for themselves, the ability to Stay Focused so they can get good grades and set and achieve their goals. How about developing the Self-Discipline to start and do the right things on their own without being reminded again and again by you?

There are so many skills for life that we need to teach our kids to be successful, yet there’s so little time and so many distractions. If there was a Fun, Exciting and Easy Way for your child to get all of the “fundamental life skills” needed for success would you be interested or at least be open-minded enough to test it out and see for yourself?

Happy Healthy Safer Karate Kids!

Nothing Builds Confidence Like Knowing Self Defense

My name is John Nottingham, and I have been a martial arts and self-defense teacher for over 25 years, specializing in helping kids and families become super successful at those core life skills. My team and I teach bully prevention, stranger safety, conflict avoidance, and practical personal protection strategies as well. You may have seen us on channels 3, 5, 10, 12 news or in newspapers or magazines. As an Eagle Scout and former Army Airborne soldier, I take these traditional martial arts values very seriously, but teach them to children in a fun way. My team is hand picked and highly trained to lead by example and encourage these values in each child.

Why Do Phoenix Parents Bring Their Kids To Our Karate School?
One thing that I’ve discovered over the years is that more families bring their children to martial arts for so many other benefits far beyond the blocks, punches and kicks. The unfortunate part is that there are so many martial arts places out there who claim they can deliver what parents really want but fail miserably at actually making it happen! But not USA Martial Arts and I Can Prove it to you!

“How to Effectively Bully and Victim Proof Your Child”

How To Protect Yourself From Bullying – Unconventional Bullying Advice
http://bullyproofingarizona.blogspot.com/

Former Soldier and Martial Arts Instructor Shares His 5 Step Program That Will Catapult Your Child’s Confidence, Instill an “I-Can” Attitude & Provide Them the Practical Tools to Protect Themselves from Bullies

Dear Arizona Parent:

Did You Know:

• Bullying is the #1 cause of school children’s absenteeism in the U.S.A.
• Bullying has been linked to higher rates of teen depression and suicide.
• Rigby (2002), who is a respected researcher on the topic of bullying, nationally and internationally, states:
• “Bullying involves a desire to hurt + hurtful action + a power imbalance + (typically) repetition + an unjust use of power + evident enjoyment by the aggressor and generally a sense of being oppressed on the part of the victim.” (p 51)
• Every day, 160,000 students skip school because they fear being bullied, according to the PACER Center, a parent training and information center for families of children. According to the National Association of School Psychologists,
• 1 in 7 schoolchildren is a bully or victim
• Bullying affects 5 million school children in U.S.

You may be thinking to yourself, “Do I know the techniques, tools and strategies to help my child confront today’s bullying dangers?
Don’t worry – there IS a solution – but before I get to it, let me tell you a story about a boy who was the target of a bully and how it changed his life forever…

SKINNY, UN-ATHLETIC ASTHMATIC
KID TORMENTED BY A BULLY

• His father told him to punch the bully right in the nose to “teach him a lesson”.
• His mother told him to just walk away.
• His teachers never knew about it because the bullying took place out of their sight, and often off school grounds, on the way to or from school.

He didn’t want to tell on the bullying kid because he would feel weak, like a sissy, only inviting more trouble.

He was afraid of getting in trouble for fighting, calling attention to his problem. But far more than that was the pain of keeping the secret. The secret was that he was scared, frustrated and felt trapped. That anger turned inward turned into feeling depressed as the bullying kept up over time.

But that all changed. He found a way:
• To stand tall, walk proud and keep his dignity
• Stand up to the bully
• To defeat a bully without fighting

In fact, he earned the respect of the bully and his classmates
Most importantly, he felt better about himself
Plus he used the lesson many more times in the future

BY STANDING UP TO THE BULLYING, HE WON SELF-RESPECT AND HIS NEW POWER HELPED HIM HELP OTHERS

Yes, as you probably guessed, that boy was me. Today I use those experiences to relate to other kids facing bullying in their lives. You see, I’ve helped thousands of children find their inner strength, their voice and successfully learn how to deal with bullying, conflicts and the most dangerous situations.

My name is John Nottingham and I am a 6th Degree Black Belt in the Martial Arts. I’ve trained in China, Korea and all over the world with some of the best of the best. I was in the Army Airborne and taught some of the roughest, toughest heroes in the world hand-to-hand, hand-to-weapon military combatives while serving in a Special Forces reserve unit.

Today I own a Executive Bodyguard Security and Training Company, and an award winning Martial Arts school. Over the past twenty five plus years, I have helped thousands of people from all walks of life discover their inner strength and stand up for themselves in every aspect of their lives.

From children who were getting tormented school to women feeling trapped in unhealthy relationships; from employees being mistreated by their bosses to Police and Security who have to use their skills daily on the streets. Not standing up for yourself from bullying can be just like a toxin that attacks your self concept and destroys dreams, hope and goals from the inside out.

THERE IS HOPE! I CAN HELP

I’ve developed a 5 step program to help you:
1. Build your child’s self esteem
2. Learn to handle unfair aggression
3. Flip the balance of power
4. Learn what to say and do and when to do it
5. Know how to spot a “bullying set up” well in advance so you can avoid it

VICTIM AND BULLY PROOFING

This unique method is not one of those ineffective “Ivory Tower” programs you’ll see from educational institutions. The schools that have had us there see the results because it works. Our Bullying Prevention Program isn’t theory or idealistic wishes. We give you hard-hitting tools, some of them the same strategies we teach to bodyguards who protect VIPs and celebrities! We’ll we think you are a VIP and are worth protecting.
