How To Do Taekwondo in Phoenix – Karate for Kids

November 25, 2011

Kids Martial Arts Phoenix
How To Do Taekwondo
Martial arts Karate for kids – Let your little one get his kicks
How does your child spend the rest of the day after getting back from school? Chances are that they prefer to stay indoors, slumped on the sofa with a bag of chips in one hand and the TV remote control in the other. It’s been proven that children these days spend more time playing with gadgets or watching television and less time engaging in some physical activity outdoors.

Testimonials
Gabriel really enjoys coming, his concentration and focus as well as his ability to pay attention and listen have improved amazingly. I find it is great for his confidence too.

Discipline is Not Punishment

September 23, 2011

Martial Arts Discipline Reinforces Good Grades and Good Manners

The Martial Arts are legendary for the development of self-discipline, especially in children.

While most understand the methodology of martial arts instruction, some parents confuse the discipline in martial arts for punishment. However, it is not punishment at all, rather it is the secret to the key of developing self discipline and empathy.

There was a movement in the martial arts in recent years to eliminate push ups, board breaking and failing students on belt tests. Some instructors felt it was bad business. The consequence is that many martial arts schools today have earned the reputation as belt factories or McDojos. Unfortunately, some people have generalized that all traditional or classical martial arts schools are the same. This is not the case.

Many instructors chose to stay the course and risk the business to stay true to the disciplined style of teaching without watering down standards. It is this group that understands the profound impact that discipline and the tools such as push ups, board breaking and sparring have on their students.

Yes, these can be scary to the overly protective parent. However, the world we live in is not as nice as we hope. Even the parent with the best intentions and highest hopes cannot protect their child from every challenge, obstacle or risk. Life is risk. In my experience, rather than trying to change all 5+ billion people on the planet, it is better to work on preparing ourselves and our children to properly face those realities.

Martial Arts discipline is one method of preparing children for todays world, and perhaps more importantly tomorrows. I would encourage parents to seek out an instructor that encourages excellence in your child, has high expectations and holds them accountable. They should also use encouragement and lead by example. The instructors life should be evidence of this discipline from their physical conditioning, technical ability, attitude, social skills to achievements.

While there are no perfect people, therefore no perfect instructors, I would encourage you to keep looking for one that is perfect for your child, goals and aims. There are some truly great instructors out there if you take the time to look. Just keep in mind that their methods may seem tough at times but good communication and patience will usually help you see the profound benefit of discipline in a child’s life.

The Secret To Happier, Healthier More Confident Kids…

May 31, 2011

•••Attention Parents•••

Can you find your child in this checklist?

“If So, Read On…You Might Just Find
the Big Breakthrough You’ve Been
Seeking for Your Child!”

___ Rita, age 11, used to be confident…ready to take on the world. But after starting middle school, she seems like a different person: hesitant and unsure of herself.
The peace of the household is frequently disturbed. Everything is a battle: getting ready for school; dinnertime; homework; even things that used to be enjoyable family activities are now potential battles. Screaming matches occur on a regular basis.

___ Paula is so concerned about being popular. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wilson, worry that this will make her an easy target for negative peer pressure.

___ Simon used to enjoy playing outside, but has now settled into a couch potato lifestyle. He is putting on weight and seems to be increasingly hooked on junk food.

___ Martin, bright, smart, and formerly very interested in doing well, has succumbed to the mentality that, somehow, it’s not “cool” to try hard with his school work.

___ Mr. and Mrs. Grant are frustrated at the level of disrespect demonstrated by their children. The kids never used to talk like this before! The Halls think, “If I had talked like that when I was a kid — I would have gotten clobbered!”

___ It seems that Harper always gravitates toward the “bad crowd.” He is attracted to kids that don’t do well in school and are constantly in trouble.

___ Grace is concerned about her son, Alex. Since the divorce, he doesn’t have a positive male role model. Alex is often sullen and difficult to get along with.
If you’ve “found” your son or daughter on the checklist above
(and most people do)… Read on…

Note: We get reports like these, literally every day, from parents
whose kids train at “USA Martial Arts Phoenix.”

Gabriella’s confidence has grown tremendously since earning her Green Belt. Mrs. Johnson, her teacher, has just called to say that Jenny can now stand up in front of the class in school and confidently speak. Mom and Dad are shocked and surprised.

Not only has Jacob gotten into great physical shape…his athletic skill has improved enormously. Jacob seems to have a newfound love of being outdoors, playing, and running.

Cory, formerly terrified of moving outside his comfort zone, now eagerly takes on new challenges. As his confidence grows, he moves on to the next challenge with excitement. His parents, Laura and Eddie, credit the high energy, positive environment of “USA Martial Arts Phoenix.”

Michael has become more cheerful and helpful around the house. He enjoys family activities…just like he used to when he was younger. His mother, Barbara, reports that he is now a joy to be around.

Mom was delighted when, after the neighborhood BBQ, Mrs. Swift from down the block said, “Your son Joshua is such a well mannered young boy!”

Carol said, “Mom, the kids were saying mean things to me at school today.” Mom thinks, “Oh no, here we go again.” — and says, “Well, how did you handle it?” Mom breathes a sigh of relief when Carol says, “It’s no big deal. Their words can’t hurt me. I learned that in Martial Arts class!”

Timmy, formerly quite a slob, now seems to be taking pride in his appearance. Without being asked, somehow his hair is combed, his shirt is clean, his teeth are brushed. And, not always, but at least occasionally, his bedroom seems to be picked up and clean! Just as Timmy is proud of his Karate accomplishments, he also seems to take pride in other aspects of his life!

Introducing the USA Martial Arts Phoenix Ten Point Success System

1. Positive Role Models: The biggest asset of “USA Martial Arts Phoenix?” Easy. The teachers. Now, I’ll tell you up front. They are not like the teachers you’ve seen in the Martial Art movies. Are they “tough guys?” Yes. But what you will notice (and so will your child)…is that they are “Nice Guys.” They have been hand selected…not just because they are great Martial Artists. They have been chosen because they are wonderful people…and have a great love of helping others benefit from the Martial Arts! All of our teachers were once students at “USA Martial Arts Phoenix” themselves. They care about each student individually — and are totally committed to helping your child reach his or her potential.

2. Physical Fitness: It’s hard to feel good about yourself when you are out of shape physically…or when your athletic skills have not been fully developed. Our belief is that, regardless of how athletic somebody seems to be…there is an athlete inside all of us. When a student feels their physical skills skyrocket…it’s not long before their self-image follows suit!

3. A High Energy, Exciting Environment: Many kids have grown accustomed to virtual activities (video games, television, internet). Participating in an exciting, high energy environment, focused on an actual activity, will give your child a very real sense of achievement!

4. Regular Incentives for Effort and Achievement: The belt system of Martial Arts (your child will earn a new belt every three months: white, yellow, gold, orange, green, etc.), regular positive feedback and recognition of accomplishment, incentives for improvement, applause, smiles, and high-fives will systematically lead your child into the “Yes, I Can!” attitude you’ve always wanted for him or her.

5. The “Life Lesson of the Week”: Regular exposure, through our “Life Skills Lessons from Martial Arts Masters,” to systematic instruction, accompanied by exercises in the lessons of respect, discipline, focus, persistence, courage, discipline and confidence. (Most of the “USA Martial Arts Phoenix” parents name this as their favorite part of the program!)

6. A Proven System of Skill and Personal Development: No fancy theories or hard to understand concepts here. Our teachers are experts in teaching the actual SKILLS of listening and focus. Hint: We’ll be teaching these to your child in the very first week!

7. A Series of Positively Constructed Challenges that will build your child’s confidence. You will be delighted as you see your children confidently move outside their comfort zone. As the weeks go by, you will smile with pride as your son or daughter moves from challenge to challenge…their confidence soaring at each new accomplishment!

8. An Atmosphere of Respect: You watch with satisfaction as your children learn to give respect and to earn respect. Most importantly, they learn the essential lessons of Self-Respect!

9. Order and Structure: Even though the atmosphere is friendly and supportive, Karate is not “play time.” You will be delighted to see how your children develop focus and persistence in our orderly, structured environment.

10. A Friendship Based Environment: If you are expecting the old, harsh, authoritarian, military style Martial Art training…you are going to be sadly disappointed. When you visit us, you will find a friendly, supportive environment.

Some of the teachers and long time students have been friends for nearly 20 years. That atmosphere of friendship, support, and respect will give your
child the support he or she needs to succeed!

The Best Kept Secret to Building Greater Self-Confidence and Self-Control

April 12, 2011

The Best Kept Secret to Building
Greater Self-Confidence and Self-Control

Give your child the gift of CONFIDENCE
“ I was skeptical when I heard that karate would teach my child discipline, confidence, and self esteem……
But, now – he’s a “Straight A Student,”
Confident, and, Respectful!”

Dear Phoenix Parent,

As a parent, you prepare your child for school the best you can every day. But what do you do about developing the confidence to ask and answer questions? What about the self-control it takes for your child to raise their hand in school? How about the discipline to focus, concentrate and learn at their maximum potential. Our USA Martial Arts Phoenix school will insure these traits will be developed at our Kids Karate and Children Taekwondo programs.

I have been working with children like yours for over 25 years, helping them develop character tools they can use for the rest of their life, such as self-confidence, discipline, respect, naming a few. The USA Martial Arts Phoenix School and its full-time professional staff are fully dedicated to this goal.

In our program your child will not only have fun, but also he or she will learn and build the confidence to be a great success at home, school and in Life! You don’t believe me? Read on and see what some parents have to say about our program.

The Karate for Kids program works hand-in-hand with a child’s schoolwork, providing improved self-discipline, self-confidence, mental alertness and goal setting skills. Watch as your child increases in confidence, energy and spirit. Stand and be dazzled as he becomes unstoppable in his quest for…

Greater academic achievement.
Unshakable self respect.
Increased strength and fitness, in both body and mind.

What we offer in our Karate for Kids program goes beyond kicking, blocking, and punching. It reaches into your child’s inner challenges that goes beyond “beating up the neighborhood bully” – instead it battles with your child’s inner self doubt as he develops.

Doubts like:
” I’m not good enough”
” Am I as good a Johnny?”
” I wish I was smarter than Sarah?”
” Why do they always pick on me?”
” Why doesn’t anybody like me?”

I am sure you have questioned yourself on how to help your child with these doubts. The good news is, I have a proven solution. A Program that has already worked for thousands of children- our Kids Karate program which will help your child learn easier than you think.

Remember, it’s not so much about your child learning the skills to fight others, but the ability to conquer himself by taming his innermost fears. Once your child learns these lifelong self-improvement tools we would have unleashed within him, a powerful, unstoppable force.
In other words, when your child uses the discipline of karate to conquer his fears, he has power to transfer that discipline to all other areas of his life. I know of no other sport that does this better than karate.

You may wonder how we can make a claim that karate is unlike any other sport in helping your child develop the important attributes we have been talking about. Fact of the matter is, that karate will increase your child’s strength, flexibility endurance, balance, and harmony, which in turn will leave him/her marveling at these changes.

In fact, these changes to his/her physical skills will act as a foundation for something much more important: the development of his/her value skills, mental and spiritual; not separate from her physical skills, but intimately connected – even bonded-to them.

The following are but three examples of what areas your child will grow in. These are just three of the powerful, energizing values your child will get from the “Kickin’ Kids” program. In short, you can look forward to your child developing:

Powerful Self Control: Your child will refuse to give in to negative peer pressure, and will develop a deeper respect for rules.
Improved Focus: Your child will learn what’s needed, along with the skill to “zero in” on critical tasks at hand. Normal, yet time-wasting, childhood distractions won’t get in his/her way.
Fearless Self Confidence: Watch as your child finds the courage to open any door life has to offer.
LITTLE TIGERS CHILDREN TAEKWONDO- Ages 4 to 6

In addition to our internationally recognized Phoenix Kids Karate program, we offer a program called the Little Tigers program and was developed specifically for preschool age children ages 4 through 6. Just like in the Kids Karate program, Little Tigers have their own unique patches and “Victory Stars.” Stars are earned in the same way as the Karate for Kids program, with slight modifications in recognition of the preschool age of the child. Four different colored.

There are many reasons for kids to become involved in the Martial Arts. We have developed programs based on traditional Martial Arts for kids. The Kids Karate Programs are based on a lifetime learning concept in addition to technical skills. The building blocks for our system are monthly themes such as:

Goals

Perseverance

Confidence

Self Awareness

Respect

Self-Esteem Friendship

Self-Control

Self-Improvement

Courtesy

Integrity

Dedication

In addition to monthly themes, our system includes the unique victory patch. Kids are rewarded special “victory stars.” These difference colored stars are rewarded for outstanding performance in karate class, school, home, or at a tournament competition. Kids may receive the following stars for the following deeds:

GOLD – Straight A’s, honor roll, or significant improvement
SILVER – Special performance awards
BLUE – Monthly themes, weekly lessons, classroom performance
RED – Tournament participation

Four different colored Victory Patches are available to accommodate all the stars that can be earned by high achieving Karate Kids:
Blue 0-24 Stars
Silver 25-49 Stars
Gold 50-99 Stars
Blue/Gold 100+ Stars

Psychological Impact and Benefits of Martial Arts for Children

March 29, 2011

Psychological Impact and Benefits of Martial Arts for Children. Scientific research backs putting kids in martial arts.

Martial Arts is Great for Children – Scientists Agree!
Many parents are reaching out to help their children have a brighter future with martial arts. From developing bullying prevention skills, safety skills for anti-abduction, building confidence and a positive self image to building a solid foundation for healthy minds and bodies, martial arts is giving children an edge.

Taekwondo | Karate | Kung Fu | Martial Arts is More Than Kicks and Punches
Martial Arts has numerous benefits beyond the kick, punch, block and throw. From establishing a class structure that helps children learn to follow directions, develop social skills, focus and complete tasks to rewarding positive behavior, it can have powerful lasting effects.

Taekwondo, Karate, Kung Fu, Jiu-Jitsu, Judo, Aikido, regardless of style, classical Martial Arts schools offer character education. Martial Arts classes also teach anger management, verbal diffusion skills, critical thinking and problem solving in addition to solid self defense. So not only do children get in better shape and have healthy activity for their bodies, but they benefit mentally as well.

Martial Arts Gives Children an Edge in School and Life
This goes a long way for parents looking to give their children an edge in university acceptance, scholarships and being prepared for a rapidly changing future.

The cultural aspects are another often overlooked benefit of martial arts for children as they increase cultural awareness, teach and reinforce foreign languages and provide unique opportunities.

Can Doing Martial Arts Make You Smarter?
Research also shows brain development in both hemispheres from using the body and mind in unique ways. Martial Arts has been linked to increased intelligence, memory, creativity and concentration.

Beyond School
Parents today are recognizing that the public school system is not enough. Millions of parents are bringingmartial arts, as we teach here, into their children’s lives to supplement their education.

Psychology Today on Martial Arts for Children
Carleton University, in a study reported in Psychology Today (January 1985), found that children in martial arts have a lower level of anxiety; an increased sense of responsibility; a decrease in the willingness to take foolish risks; a higher sense of self-esteem; higher level of social intelligence; and were less likely to be radical.

Parents report these five important benefits their children experience in our USA Martial Arts Phoenix school:

1. Martial Arts reward system improves children’s self-esteem
Martial arts are not like team sports because the emphasis is on developing the individual’s self-esteem not the team’s winning record. The belt system is the key. When kids earn their belts it gives them a great sense of accomplishment that really improves the way they feel about themselves. Nobody sits on the bench in martial arts class.

2. Martial Arts program teaches children discipline.
One of the things parents appreciate most about our classes is the improvement in their child’s self-discipline. We have a wonderful staff of patient instructors who love to work with children, but are also very clear about boundaries and safety. We enforce good rules of behavior in class, and we expect the same good behavior at home and in school. This is why so many parents are choosing martial arts to improve reinforce good character.

3. Martial Arts activities channel children’s aggression
Many doctors, counselors and psychologists actually prescribed our school for treatment because of the positive outlet it gives the kids for all their energy. Martial Arts track record for success in this arena is well established.

4. Martial Arts confidence classes enhance children’s self-esteem
We believe confidence is one of the most important things we can give kids. That’s why every class we teach has confidence-building drills included. Children develop a greater self concept because of a feeling of accountability, healthy boundaries, structure and consistent reward. Children also develop their emotional intelligence and discover their individual gifts and abilities.

5. USA Martial Arts program teaches children essential self-defense skills
Our program teaches practical, proven self-defense methods. We also teach the kids that the moves they learn in class will work, so they don’t go home and try them on their sister, or neighbor. They develop a sense of empathy and learn when and when not to use their martial arts skills.

5 Reasons Every Child Should be Enrolled in Karate

March 14, 2011

Parent Information

Here Are 5 Reasons Every Child Should be Enrolled in Karate

1. Improved Report Cards:
Our curriculum is designed to teach children the importance of concentration. Improved concentration means that your child will learn more at school. Therefore, you can expect your child to receive better grades for both academics and attitude. In our school, children who receive A’s and B’s on their report card receive a patch for their uniform indicating that they’re “Academic Achievers.”

2. Karate Builds Healthy Kids:
Karate is a great work-out. Your child will breath better, eat better and sleep better. Children who take Karate are slimmer, make better decisions about food, and in general, learn to take care of themselves. You won’t see any of our Black Belt Students smoking or using drugs, now or ever!

3. Positive Attitude:
Kids in our program learn to have a positive attitude. You won’t find yourself repeating yourself over and over, or arguing with your child like most parents do. Kids learn to be respectful of their parents and teachers. You might even catch your child saying: Yes Ma’am or Yes Sir!

4. Self Confidence:
It’s true, kids who take Karate develop better self-confidence. They’re encouraged to take chances, to push themselves further than they thought possible. The success they experience through Karate teaches them that they can be successful at anything if they truly believe they can and are willing to work hard. Improved confidence leads to better grades, a better circle of friends, better performance in sports and extracurricular activities in general.

5. Self-Defense:
Karate teaches two forms of self-defense. One is physical, your child will improve his or her strength, flexibility and overall health. Additionally, your child will learn to strike with tremendous power and effectiveness. Hopefully your child will never be picked on or need to fight…But should the occasion arise, shouldn’t everyone know how to protect themselves? The second form of self-defense Karate teaches is internal. Children learn to spot danger and avoid dangerous people, places and activities. Karate can help your child avoid the need for a physical confrontation. This second form of self-defense is perhaps the most valuable of the two.

Develop a More Focused, Confident, Fit Child with Martial Arts in Phoenix

March 14, 2011

Attention Phoenix AZ Parents!

“The Secrets To Develop a More Focused, Confident, Self-Disciplined and Physically Fit Child Revealed To Phoenix Parents.”

From:
John Nottingham, Owner- USA Martial Arts Phoenix

Dear Friend,

As a parent you prepare your child for the future the best way you can everyday, but what about developing the core “Character Lessons and Practical Life Skills”: The Self-confidence to speak up for themselves, the ability to Stay Focused so they can get good grades and set and achieve their goals. How about developing the Self-Discipline to start and do the right things on their own without being reminded again and again by you?

There are so many skills for life that we need to teach our kids to be successful, yet there’s so little time and so many distractions. If there was a Fun, Exciting and Easy Way for your child to get all of the “fundamental life skills” needed for success would you be interested or at least be open-minded enough to test it out and see for yourself?

Happy Healthy Safer Karate Kids!

Nothing Builds Confidence Like Knowing Self Defense

My name is John Nottingham, and I have been a martial arts and self-defense teacher for over 25 years, specializing in helping kids and families become super successful at those core life skills. My team and I teach bully prevention, stranger safety, conflict avoidance, and practical personal protection strategies as well. You may have seen us on channels 3, 5, 10, 12 news or in newspapers or magazines. As an Eagle Scout and former Army Airborne soldier, I take these traditional martial arts values very seriously, but teach them to children in a fun way. My team is hand picked and highly trained to lead by example and encourage these values in each child.

Why Do Phoenix Parents Bring Their Kids To Our Karate School?
One thing that I’ve discovered over the years is that more families bring their children to martial arts for so many other benefits far beyond the blocks, punches and kicks. The unfortunate part is that there are so many martial arts places out there who claim they can deliver what parents really want but fail miserably at actually making it happen! But not USA Martial Arts and I Can Prove it to you!
