The Women’s Self Defense Boogeyman Lives On

April 22, 2010

Women’s Self-Defense Trojan Horse
Part III

The boogeyman jumping out of the bushes and getting women from behind is still grabbing headlines while scores of women and children suffer at the hands of loved ones in their homes.

Why this fascination with the myth of so-called “unpredictable violence”? Perhaps it has something to do with our very human nature of enjoying drama and vicarious adventure and flirtation with danger. Perhaps it is a deep-seated fascination with the idea of “I’m glad it wasn’t me”. The fact is that each of us can and do predict behavior based on information we extract from our environment. In my professional opinion, the key to making it useful for survival is knowing what to look for, when to look for it and how to act on it.

Be Encouraged
People protect themselves successfully every day. Yet it is usually the failed attempts that make the news, offering us news consumers little to apply other than the anxiety pumped out from the sensationalized words, images and hopeless, distorted or misguided attitudes. A powerful and valuable skill that can convert this information into useful self-defense and personal security application is learning what to pay attention to – such as what worked, as well as what failed.

While not a psychologist or sociologist, I have taught self-defense, personal security, military, law enforcement and bodyguards for my entire professional life. [If experiencing a criminal attack, I wouldn’t want a clinical psychologist by my side. I’d rather have a person equipped with what Gavin and my company teach.]

Alarmist Media Self-Defense Myths Strike Again

April 22, 2010

Women’t Self-Defense Trojan Horse
Part II

Reporter:

“Abducted in daylight outside a Target store and killed, Kelsey Smiths story could have been any womans story. Some [insert name of area here] are taking steps tonight to make sure it doesn’t happen to them.” -reporter on local news

Queue the flirtatious local Karate instructor and self proclaimed self-defense expert and 22nd Degree Black Belt in Hoo Flung Pooh. [Or the deep voiced tough chick who looks like she can play for the NFL] While often well intentioned, advice like this is often not only incorrect, but can be dangerous.

They sell ads and captivate viewers attention, but are they really presenting the facts? Should the media be shamed for profiteering on the deaths of women with tragic stories like this? Is it a public service when reports distort the truth and create unnecessary, and potentially dangerous, anxiety for the news audience?

The fact is that it couldn’t just happen to any of us. The context has to be just right in order for the crime to take place. It presumes too much in claiming, “It could be any womans story” and leaves no room for reality.

How many factors must be aligned in order for the crime to take place? Let’s see… A criminal with motive, opportunity, intent, ability, at the right timeline, in the precise location with adequate distance, and numerous other factors. No mention of these critical survival factors and requirements for crime. Just more sensational headlines to grab attention and raise anxiety of viewers. I contend that it perpetuates a helpless or misinformed state of mind.

Token Woman Self Defense Class Testimonial:

“I think its important for women to learn self defense so they become more aware. Now I feel more confident and think I can protect myself if anything ever happened.”

It’s the same news report that has been on for years, repackaged with nothing substantively new or significantly helpful for truly protecting yourself and loved ones from the most prevalent dangers likely to be faced.

The old saying, SSDD [Same Stuff Different Day] is validated once again. The same failed and misguided self defense advice women have been hearing for decades that continues.

Women’s Self-Defense Trojan Horse

April 22, 2010

Self Defense Alarmists Perpetuate Women’s Safety and Attack Prevention Myths
Are you being mislead about the truth of self-defense for women?
Part I

LOCAL NEWS REPORTER:

“The key to self defense is to be aware of your surroundings.” “Be prepared for anything.” – recent and frequently presented news report

Well thank you Captain Obvious, we are now free to move about our busy lives. Make no mistake, this is no gift of knowledge; instead it may be a self-defense Trojan horse.

We’ve all heard it over and over again. Yet, has all this alarmist hype made a difference in personal safety? I would argue a resounding yes-in an unintended dangerous way. It has probably hurt as much or more than it has helped. I agree with experts, far beyond my education, that fear-based media reporting and scare tactics haven’t helped women be more safe, but it has made a difference in adding anxiety and stress to millions of men and women’s lives.

“It can happen to anyone, anywhere at any time.”
FALSE
It can only happen when the conditions are right.

My suggestion is to demand accurate information presented without the artificial stimulation of our primal survival centers of the brain in order to capture our attention for the sake of hawking sponsorship ads for facial soap.

Accurate information such as the fact that women are most at risk from physical harm from somebody they know would be more helpful. Education such as learning to listen and act on your God-given survival intuition saves lives.

Contrary to commonly held belief, fighting back and fight for your life may not always be the best tactic. The situation should dictate the response and the more of the right kind of training one has, the more options are available when needed.

The Gift of FEAR by Gavin de Becker

For those interested in more on the subject, I recommend reading best selling author Gavin de Beckers book The Gift of Fear or his other book on learning to discriminate on media information regarding safety called FEAR LESS.

Just because self defense advice is offered as a free gift, in the news or passed on in email from seemingly credible sources, it pays to do your due diligence – especially when it comes to protecting your life or the lives of those you love. The wrong information at a critical time might be the self-defense Trojan Horse that could lead to problems. Question and verify the self-defense sound-bytes.

God bless Gavin de Becker for helping make sense of it all and giving people the tools to sort out the non-sense from survival sense.
