The Real Truth About VIPER Street Combat Personal Protection Self Defense & Bodyguard Training With John Nottingham

May 11, 2012
No More Deer-In-The-Headlights!
Viper taught me how to function clearly under stress, and channel the power of my adrenaline. If you know martial arts, VIPER magnifies your knowledge and training ten fold.
Phil Borgia, Insurance, Real Estate, Black Belt

“I Was Shocked…”
As a long time professional in martial arts, I was shocked at the VIPER program. I thought I could handle any situation, but VIPER introduced me to reality. It’s real, its in your face, and it works. I am a force to be dealt with.
David Bravo
Model, Robert Black Agency
Trained in Krav Maga
Professional Martial Arts Instructor

I Was Unprepared For a Fight!
Priceless training. I couldn’t believe how unprepared I was for a real confrontation. I learned more about street defense in the VIPER course than in 10 years of martial arts.
Tommy Brown
Police Officer
Martial Arts Champion

Two Strange Men Approached
I was able to use what I learned while out with my 5 year old daughter one evening. I backed two strange men off… and I believe I wouldn’t have known what to do and keep my daughter safe without this training.
L. Templeman
Former Federal Corrections Officer

“Life Transforming!”
I have used the VIPER skills. It is truly a positive, life transforming experience. You will not be the same person… and you really wont want to be.
Teresa “Tess” Jenkins
Actor
Martial Arts Instructor

TRS Review:
Why do the Spec Ops love this training? Cuz it’s super-fast to learn… and unbeatable in the field. These are all new cutting-edge skills. With no practice at all, you will be at home with extreme violence… and be able to USE your new skills when it comes down to “you or him” situations. Learn how to reduce ALL your “pre-fight” thinking to just 3 simple choices… the 4 super-accessible weapons hidden inside your body… how to recognize a true threat 6 times faster than “normal” people do! (Simple ways to judge the situation — allows you to safely ignore false threats, and react with stunning speed to real danger.)… how VIPER-trained combat-ready professionals control their emotions in crunch-time… how to take a gun away as easily as scooping a pair of scissors from a small child… how to demolish an attacker in the dark. (90% of attacks occur in low-light conditions — not in the bright dojo. You’ll be astonished how easy it is to fight in the dark, the way John reveals.). And a lot more.

How does your child spend the rest of the day after getting back from school? Chances are that they prefer to stay indoors, slumped on the sofa with a bag of chips in one hand and the TV remote control in the other. It’s been proven that children these days spend more time playing with gadgets or watching television and less time engaging in some physical activity outdoors.

Gabriel really enjoys coming, his concentration and focus as well as his ability to pay attention and listen have improved amazingly. I find it is great for his confidence too.

Military Hand-to-hand combat system for Special Forces comes to Phoenix in Self Defense Training Course

Practical self-defense Phoenix Arizona

Military Hand-to-hand combat system for Special Forces comes to Phoenix

NTS VIPER Tactical Instructor Anthony Miles Shows an Explosive Move from VIPER Street Combat Self Defense under the watchful eye of founder John Nottingham

John Nottingham launched his Arizona school USA Martial Arts & Kickboxing in 1992 and recently opened a new training center in Phoenix to accommodate his Bodyguard Security & Training Company [Executive/Close Protection]. In addition to teaching kids good values through martial arts, Nottingham teaches military, law enforcement and the discerning civilian.

“There are no rules on the street when it comes to your survival or that of a loved one.”, says Nottingham.

Their methods are considered unorthodox to the mainstream self-defense or martial arts way of teaching. Nottingham’s approach is to break structure, conventional thinking and teach clients to think and operate outside the box. The majority of martial arts and self-defense systems pre-scribe rules and strict conformity, sportive emphasis or complex motor movements. Although well-intentioned, many tactical self-defense, fighting and hand-to-hand-combat instructors are retrofitting sportive and cultural tradition lifestyle martial arts to fit what they believe is effective self-defense.
Nottingham’s self-defense method, called VIPER, is designed to break things down into effective, simple self-defense steps and principles that can easily be adapted to a wide variety of individuals in varying dangerous situations.

Last Resort Handgun Disarm Defense

Military Origins
Nottingham and his team come from a unique backgrounds in the military, having served in Special Forces, Airborne units, law enforcement and a decades in the martial arts. In the early 90’s, Nottingham was asked by his Army company Commander to develop an updated, simple and effective hand-to-hand combat course as part of an experimental program. His research continues to this day as he stays on the cutting edge of combatives and defensive tactics. His client list includes those who serve in combat, on the street as law enforcement and bodyguards to protect VIPs.

caption=

Bodyguard Tactics for Strategic Self-Defense

“The best way to explain VIPER (his version of reality based self-defense) is the skills you would use to survive the most terrifying criminal assault situations you or your family can imagine. We cover the entire gamet from early detection for avoidance to the harsh reality of physical intervention such as gouging out an attackers eye as a last resort. We teach our clients how to manage situations most people don’t believe are possible to survive.”, said Nottingham

“When your families lives are in danger or your life is on the line, you can’t be thinking about rules or worrying about the wrong things. Part of the initial education is deprogramming the incorrect conditioning and beliefs people have about self-defense so that they can adopt an accurate and winning mindset. Self-Defense is a leadership role so our clients learn to be assertive when they have to.”

VIPER Self Defense is built on natural reflexes, physics, bio-mechanics and the physiological response to intense stress.

“Clients have refered to VIPER as an American Krav Maga type training due to it’s reliance on combative principles, simple and effective self defense. However, VIPER Evolution I does not emphasize the physical as much at this level as Krav Maga does. Instead we teach smart strategies to avoid, detect, diffuse, avoid and thwart situations before the begin. We find this is a faster method to efficacy. Krav Maga was designed for young, fit, military personnel so it is very intense and high risk training. I love the Krav Maga system and practice it, however it is predicated on high mobility, explosive movement and a degree of athleticism most people don’t have or maintain. We take pride in VIPER being much safer than Krav Maga and can reach a wider array of clients because VIPER isn’t designed just for young, resiliant, military soldiers.”

HOW IS VIPER SELF DEFENSE UNIQUE?

Take for example a criminal threatening your family with a gun. The natural instinct for an untrained person is to fixate on the weapon. VIPER teaches clients how to control that intense stress and mental function through proprietary conditioning training, the same used for training elite Special Forces operators for combat. The body’s stress reaction becomes a conditioned trigger to look for exits, cover, and opportunities an untrained individual, gripped by panic, would not see.

Background of VIPER Close Quarters Combat CQC
VIPER was developed by John Nottingham while serving in a reserve detachment of a Special Forces Unit. He was selected by his company commander due to his unique background in combative martial arts in order to develop a scientific, highly effective method of practical self-defense for Special Operations. It had to be able to beat other elite forces hand-to-hand and weapon close combat training.

What Makes VIPER Different
The key difference in VIPER is in it’s testing. It only takes techniques, tactics and strategies that can be quickly and effectively implemented by a user then tested under stress. To date, Nottingham and his team have run thousands of scenarios and gleaned invaluable feedback from the tactics used in the field and street.

During the 25 years he’s served teaching Martial Arts, Law Enforcement, Military, Nottingham updated and refined his method of practical self-defense, and after scientific study and observation, adjusted his system to teach it to the civilian men, women and children.

Nottingham’s training materials, research and unique approach has inspired numerous other instructors. His training videos and programs have been adopted by military, law enforcement, martial artists, bouncers, agents and bodyguards all over the world.

“It’s gratifying to get feedback from Police Officers or Military that our programs saved their lives in the field. That’s what this training is designed to do – protect and give the good guys the edge.”, said Nottingham

Realistic Self Defense Training. Will What I Know Really Work?

“At some point everyone will face a moment when they have to ask themselves if what they know about self-defense and safety will truly and honestly work when they need it most. It might be to protect their loved ones or at a time when they are out of shape, injured or in a unique environment. VIPER will give them newfound confidence.”

Nottingham is quick to point out that martial arts is great and has numerous benefits but it is not to be mistaken with specialized self-defense and personal protection training. I encourage good martial arts training but it needs to be properly placed in context. Martial Artists are by far our fastest adapting clients, once they grasp the fundamental shift in mindset. However, what we do in VIPER doesn’t look anything like a typical martial arts class.

Nottingham and his team will be hosting a special VIPER SELF DEFENSE training course in May. It is a three day VIPER intensive immersion course combining classroom, slow motion drills and scenario training with a fully padded mock assailant.

V.I.P.E.R. Personal Protection Bodyguard Tactics for Self Defense Security
Students will learn to deal with the most common street attacks and self-defense situations including punches, chokes, grabs, and attacks from various positions such as from behind and on the ground.

The class even sets up different environments to have the students apply the VIPER thinking and action steps to resolve or escape the situations. Students get to learn how to deal with the stress and anxiety of a real attack in crunch time and how to manage the adrenaline dump, rapid heart rate and how to focus on what matters most for survival.

Instructors encourage students and create a learning atmosphere of comfort and relaxed professionalism where cheering is as prevalent as learning. Nottingham explains, “We know it is a stressful subject so our goal is to make it as enjoyable experience as possible. Our clients often comment on how much fun they had while learning and want to come back. Our repeat business is amazing. We guarantee you come out transformed and thrilled with your experience or we refund your money in full.”

In class, students learn the techniques of:
o Punching
o Kicking
o Elbows
o Knees
o Headbutts
o Biting
o Eye gouging
o [and some things Nottingham says only go to clients and too graphic for public articles]

Clients learn to develop power in their attacks and the vulnerable places on the human anatomy to attack for the best results. VIPER Self Defense emphasizes targeting and strategy over perfecting techniques, teaching students to keep it simple and direct.

Brutal Reality Check
Clients are shown videos of actual crime footage, assaults and then discuss applying VIPER tactics and tools to learn from the situation and prevail. Although graphic, Nottingham emphasizes that we have to understand violence in order to thwart it.

Our of Shape? Even More Reason To Take VIPER
Nottingham says that he can teach any willing student despite age, physical make-up or limitation. “Everyone can improve his or her personal protection with this course. It’s not about beating the other guy into submission. Most of it is brains over brawn. We focus on what a client CAN do, not what they can’t. People are often amazed to find out that we are hard wired for self-defense. We just need a few tools to best bring it out.”

Choosing A Martial Arts School For Children in Phoenix Arizona

May 31, 2011

Choosing A School

Taekwondo for Children - Karate for Kids

” The children’s program at USA Martial Arts Phoenix is outstanding and provides an environment for children to develop as individuals and leaders with strong character and values.”

– Michael W., Phoenix AZ

Things to consider when choosing a Martial Arts School

A martial arts school is a unique thing within our community – more than a place for fitness and social activity, it is a place designed to promote personal growth and to enhance character development. When looking for the right martial arts school for yourself or your child, we believe you consider the following factors:

Traditional System Foundation
Look for a school that teaches has one traditional or classical art as their foundation- karate, judo, aikido, taekwondo, kung-fu, etc., not several. An old martial arts proverb says that the hunter who shoots at two rabbits misses both. As a beginner, you want to focus on one thing and learn it well, perhaps before moving on to another art. It is unwise and ill advised to be a, “Jack of all trades and Master of none.” Also be leery of schools that claim to teach their “own style”. Every legitimate school from Karate, Taekwondo, or Kung Fu creates a unique curriculum but it should be based on proven methods and decades of experience. Think of it much as you would a university.

Martial Arts Style
Style srefers to a way of teaching a specific art – not to a differentiation between arts. Karate, taekwondo, and kung-fu are different martial arts, not different styles. In the same way, the Japanese/Okinawan arts of judo, jujitsu, aikido, sumo, kendo, iado, yudo, etc. are different martial arts, not different styles of karate (although this has become a common way of describing it to the uninformed). The major styles of karate are Shotokan, Shorin Ryu, Goju Ryu, Shito Ryu, Wado Ryu, Isshin Ryu, and Uechi Ryu. The major traditional styles of Taekwondo are Moo Duk Kwan (Tang Soo Do), Chung Do Kwan, Song Moo Kwan, Ji Do Kwan. Today Taekwondo is commonly referred to by its political affiliations namely, WTF (Olympic or World Taekwondo), ITF, and ATA. Wushu is the generalized inclusive modern name for Chinese Martial Arts (commonly referred to as Kung Fu). Some common Kung Fu (Wushu) styles are Hsing-I, Wing Chun, Hungar, 5 Animal, and Shoalin Kempo- but there are hundreds.

Martial Arts Rank System
Most martial arts today utilize a ranking system for its practitioners. In the Japanese martial arts (karate, judo, etc.) the ranking system usually consists of black belt and a variety of colored belts leading up to black belt. These pre-black belt ranks usually start with white belt and end, just below black belt, with brown belt. The ranks in between are signified by several other colors that may vary from school to school. Our pre-black belt (or class/grade) ranks are as follows: Gold, Orange, Green, Purple, Blue, Brown, and Red. Black Belt ranks range from 1st degree through 10th degree black belt. Various titles are assigned according to leadership responsibility, much like Military Rank. Tenth level Black Belt is generally reserved for the founder of the system, the one person at the top of an organization of an art, or a life long practitioner of the art. Legitimate systems usually require a minimum age of 35 with 25 plus years of intense practice for the rank of “Master”. There are only a handful of true 7th, 8th, 9th, and 10th Degree Black Belts in each martial art through out the entire world. And all known legitimate martial artists at this level are above 50 years of age.

Martial Arts National or International Organizations
Does the school belong to a recognized national or international organization? Most good schools are part of such organizations. This is one indication but not necessarily a guarantee.

Instructor Credentials in Martial Arts
All legitimate martial arts instructors have credentials to verify their rank and/or any titles they hold (Master, Grandmaster, etc). Some questions you might ask include: Where did they get their rank? Did they promote themselves? Or were they promoted by people within their own organization who are beneath them in rank? A person can’t give himself a BA, MA, or Ph.D degree, nor can they be promoted to such a degree by someone who only holds a BA degree themselves. In the same way, a person can’t promote themselves to any degree of black belt. And they can’t be promoted by people who aren’t qualified to make such a promotion. Unfortunately, self-promotion and promotion by an unqualified “board” are very common within the martial arts. To be considered legitimate, a person must be promoted through their black belt ranks by someone who is at least two black belt levels above them (In our system, only a Master can promote an individual in any rank). Ask if the instructor belongs to the same organization that issued their rank? (They should. Many move upwards in rank by switching from organization to organization.) Do their credentials seem to make sense? Ones that may not are a 25-year-old instructor claiming a high black belt rank (above 4th degree) or rank in several different arts. Does the instructor have any teaching certification beyond their rank certification? A black belt doesn’t suddenly make someone qualified to teach. They must complete an additional program to learn this skill.

Instructor Personality for Teaching Martial Arts
You should take special notice of the instructor as he teaches. The instructor may not be the person who greets you or even who gives you your first lesson or two – often called introductory classes. You want to make sure the personality of the instructor suits you and/or your children.

Sport vs. Self Defense Martial Arts
Do they offer, recommend, or require competition? To be useful, students must be paired up for dual practice. Do they utilize adequate safety gear for these sessions? How much control is utilized? We do not, but some schools require full or semi-full contact during paired sessions, which we consider dangerous, especially to children.

Martial Arts Weapons
If you are interested in weapons training, be sure to ask if the school teaches them. Not all schools do. The traditional Japanese/Okinawan weapons are not actually designed as weapons. They were originally farm and fishing tools used by Japanese and Okinawan people in their daily jobs. And, since real weapons were banned, they were forced to use these tools when attacked by those with real weapons. Other Martial Arts weapons have a history all their own including military traditions. At USA Martial Arts Phoenix, we offer training in these ancient and contemporary practical weapons to those in a Black Belt training program. Mastery of each of these requires different physical and mental skills. As such, they round a student out, provide great motivation for practice and develop unique attributes and extraordinary control and timing. Some require greater concentration, others greater strength, etc, making them a great training tool for children, who become quickly bored.

Watch or participate in a class
Can you watch a class before you or your children join? Many schools discourage observation. We encourage it. We also offer an introductory class for a nominal fee to allow potential students to get a feel for our school before committing to a program.

Program length
It takes time to acquire skill at self defense and develop the life changing qualities a good martial arts school seeks to instill in its students – making them healthier, happier, and more accomplished. (These qualities include self control, self discipline, self confidence, and self esteem.) Something acquired quickly is usually forgotten just as quickly. As a result, most schools require a year commitment. However, there may be other options.

Inquire at the school.
Final Thoughts Keep your eyes open and don’t be afraid to ask questions. It takes hard work, dedication, time, and willingness to grow to achieve a black belt in any art or system. And it takes the right instructor, art or style, setting, and the support of ones fellow students to reach that point. In some schools, students have a (negative) competitive attitude towards each other, especially newcomers. Avoid these. Some schools also spend most of their time entertaining students, playing games, or teaching bogus techniques that don’t work in real situations. You want a school that will help you or your child reach their goals in life, not hamper them.

Make sure you feel comfortable with the school (including the instructors and fellow students) before taking the first step and making that commitment.

The ABC’s of Personal Safety from a Security Self Defense Specialist, Trainer and Speaker

Self Defense Tips – The ABC’s of Personal Safety and Security for Personal Protection

Self defense is something everyone knows that we should learn, yet few actually do. Rather than use a few self defense or fighting tips as an emotional pacifier, it is important to test and apply what you think you know. It is through this process that self defense competence is built. With self defense competence comes personal protection and security confidence. A good self defense instructor will ad to your peace of mind and help you use your innate survival signals and skills to bring to bear in protecting yourself and/or the ones you love.
When you learn to defend yourself you are less likely to have to because:

1. You tend to avoid potentially dangerous situations because you recognize them earlier
2. You are more likely to trust your intuition/gut feelings therefore act on them
3. Project more confidence which often removes you from the victim profile. Criminals like easy targets, not difficult ones.

HERE ARE A FEW OF OUR ABC’s OF PERSONAL PROTECTION – SELF DEFENSE STRATEGIES FOR PERSONAL SECURITY

Alert to Avoid Potentially Dangerous Situations
– Knowledge and Awareness of dangerous situations and how criminals operate
– Trusting instincts and Acting on intuition
Always observe safe habits and practices – Remember, we are always building habits – so practice good ones

Breathe and Be Calm by Believing you have options
– Belly Breath with Backpressure on exhale helps manage stress, adrenaline and fear
Be looking for opportunities, weapons, barriers, escape routes and targets
Be prepared with training and a plan but Be flexible

Communicate with Confidence and Commit
Clearly say and demonstrate directly what you mean and mean what you say
Change the Context of any situation you feel might lead to a violent encounter
Commit to your plan and execute with intensity

Distance
Whenever you increase distance, you increase time and options and usually deny the targets

Eyes on targets and Escape options
Eyes, neck, groin, knees, Everything’s a weapon, Escape

5 Reasons Every Child Should be Enrolled in Karate

March 14, 2011

Parent Information

Here Are 5 Reasons Every Child Should be Enrolled in Karate

1. Improved Report Cards:
Our curriculum is designed to teach children the importance of concentration. Improved concentration means that your child will learn more at school. Therefore, you can expect your child to receive better grades for both academics and attitude. In our school, children who receive A’s and B’s on their report card receive a patch for their uniform indicating that they’re “Academic Achievers.”

2. Karate Builds Healthy Kids:
Karate is a great work-out. Your child will breath better, eat better and sleep better. Children who take Karate are slimmer, make better decisions about food, and in general, learn to take care of themselves. You won’t see any of our Black Belt Students smoking or using drugs, now or ever!

3. Positive Attitude:
Kids in our program learn to have a positive attitude. You won’t find yourself repeating yourself over and over, or arguing with your child like most parents do. Kids learn to be respectful of their parents and teachers. You might even catch your child saying: Yes Ma’am or Yes Sir!

4. Self Confidence:
It’s true, kids who take Karate develop better self-confidence. They’re encouraged to take chances, to push themselves further than they thought possible. The success they experience through Karate teaches them that they can be successful at anything if they truly believe they can and are willing to work hard. Improved confidence leads to better grades, a better circle of friends, better performance in sports and extracurricular activities in general.

5. Self-Defense:
Karate teaches two forms of self-defense. One is physical, your child will improve his or her strength, flexibility and overall health. Additionally, your child will learn to strike with tremendous power and effectiveness. Hopefully your child will never be picked on or need to fight…But should the occasion arise, shouldn’t everyone know how to protect themselves? The second form of self-defense Karate teaches is internal. Children learn to spot danger and avoid dangerous people, places and activities. Karate can help your child avoid the need for a physical confrontation. This second form of self-defense is perhaps the most valuable of the two.

No Magic Formula for Earning an Authentic Martial Arts Black Belt

March 10, 2011

USA Martial Arts kids demo at an Arizona Diamondbacks game

WARNING:
READ THIS BEFORE YOU JOIN MY SCHOOL!

As I’ve been saying all along on my blogs, in my newsletter, and on the mat, THERE IS NO “MAGIC FORMULA” that will allow you to instantly achieve an authentic Black Belt, super confident kid, ultimate fighting skill or even a ripped, toned body!

So, don’t expect my trial course to be a magic genie that will instantly grant you a magical results…

Let’s be realistic – earning a Black Belt at USA Martial Arts is HARD. You are going to have to WORK if you want to follow my Martial Arts Black Belt Success System plan to achieve your goals.

A vetted Black Belt in most systems takes between 3-5 years. For some systems it may be shorter or longer. This of course depends also on how frequently and how hard an individual trains.

Can You Earn a USA Martial Arts Black Belt?
Is it do-able? Yes! I did it, and I was an insecure kid with asthma with slipping grades in school struggling to pay for expensive martial arts lessons… I had to work twice as hard as others using nothing more than my own guts, a lot of trial and error, some “sweat blood and tears” and the few bucks I scraped together to get started. I took all that experience and developed my Black Belt Success system over my lifetime and have helped hundreds earn the esteemed rank of Black Belt.

There are many people who have joined my school who DIDN’T make it… maybe they decided it was too hard, or the process wasn’t “quick enough” for them, or that they weren’t cut out to be an authentic Black Belt…

But, that’s the beauty of this introductory trial course WEBSPECIAL – before you’re done completing it, you’ll KNOW what it takes to become a success in anything…

And, you’ll be informed enough to make a decision as to whether it’s right for your child.

Yet, there are many people who have taken the trial course, followed the system I outline, and that credit their success to following the Black Belt Success System.

It might be right for you or your child.

We invite you to give it a try today.
