Discipline is Not Punishment

September 23, 2011

Martial Arts Discipline Reinforces Good Grades and Good Manners

The Martial Arts are legendary for the development of self-discipline, especially in children.

While most understand the methodology of martial arts instruction, some parents confuse the discipline in martial arts for punishment. However, it is not punishment at all, rather it is the secret to the key of developing self discipline and empathy.

There was a movement in the martial arts in recent years to eliminate push ups, board breaking and failing students on belt tests. Some instructors felt it was bad business. The consequence is that many martial arts schools today have earned the reputation as belt factories or McDojos. Unfortunately, some people have generalized that all traditional or classical martial arts schools are the same. This is not the case.

Many instructors chose to stay the course and risk the business to stay true to the disciplined style of teaching without watering down standards. It is this group that understands the profound impact that discipline and the tools such as push ups, board breaking and sparring have on their students.

Yes, these can be scary to the overly protective parent. However, the world we live in is not as nice as we hope. Even the parent with the best intentions and highest hopes cannot protect their child from every challenge, obstacle or risk. Life is risk. In my experience, rather than trying to change all 5+ billion people on the planet, it is better to work on preparing ourselves and our children to properly face those realities.

Martial Arts discipline is one method of preparing children for todays world, and perhaps more importantly tomorrows. I would encourage parents to seek out an instructor that encourages excellence in your child, has high expectations and holds them accountable. They should also use encouragement and lead by example. The instructors life should be evidence of this discipline from their physical conditioning, technical ability, attitude, social skills to achievements.

While there are no perfect people, therefore no perfect instructors, I would encourage you to keep looking for one that is perfect for your child, goals and aims. There are some truly great instructors out there if you take the time to look. Just keep in mind that their methods may seem tough at times but good communication and patience will usually help you see the profound benefit of discipline in a child’s life.

The Secret To Happier, Healthier More Confident Kids…

May 31, 2011

•••Attention Parents•••

Can you find your child in this checklist?

“If So, Read On…You Might Just Find
the Big Breakthrough You’ve Been
Seeking for Your Child!”

___ Rita, age 11, used to be confident…ready to take on the world. But after starting middle school, she seems like a different person: hesitant and unsure of herself.
The peace of the household is frequently disturbed. Everything is a battle: getting ready for school; dinnertime; homework; even things that used to be enjoyable family activities are now potential battles. Screaming matches occur on a regular basis.

___ Paula is so concerned about being popular. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wilson, worry that this will make her an easy target for negative peer pressure.

___ Simon used to enjoy playing outside, but has now settled into a couch potato lifestyle. He is putting on weight and seems to be increasingly hooked on junk food.

___ Martin, bright, smart, and formerly very interested in doing well, has succumbed to the mentality that, somehow, it’s not “cool” to try hard with his school work.

___ Mr. and Mrs. Grant are frustrated at the level of disrespect demonstrated by their children. The kids never used to talk like this before! The Halls think, “If I had talked like that when I was a kid — I would have gotten clobbered!”

___ It seems that Harper always gravitates toward the “bad crowd.” He is attracted to kids that don’t do well in school and are constantly in trouble.

___ Grace is concerned about her son, Alex. Since the divorce, he doesn’t have a positive male role model. Alex is often sullen and difficult to get along with.
If you’ve “found” your son or daughter on the checklist above
(and most people do)… Read on…

Note: We get reports like these, literally every day, from parents
whose kids train at “USA Martial Arts Phoenix.”

Gabriella’s confidence has grown tremendously since earning her Green Belt. Mrs. Johnson, her teacher, has just called to say that Jenny can now stand up in front of the class in school and confidently speak. Mom and Dad are shocked and surprised.

Not only has Jacob gotten into great physical shape…his athletic skill has improved enormously. Jacob seems to have a newfound love of being outdoors, playing, and running.

Cory, formerly terrified of moving outside his comfort zone, now eagerly takes on new challenges. As his confidence grows, he moves on to the next challenge with excitement. His parents, Laura and Eddie, credit the high energy, positive environment of “USA Martial Arts Phoenix.”

Michael has become more cheerful and helpful around the house. He enjoys family activities…just like he used to when he was younger. His mother, Barbara, reports that he is now a joy to be around.

Mom was delighted when, after the neighborhood BBQ, Mrs. Swift from down the block said, “Your son Joshua is such a well mannered young boy!”

Carol said, “Mom, the kids were saying mean things to me at school today.” Mom thinks, “Oh no, here we go again.” — and says, “Well, how did you handle it?” Mom breathes a sigh of relief when Carol says, “It’s no big deal. Their words can’t hurt me. I learned that in Martial Arts class!”

Timmy, formerly quite a slob, now seems to be taking pride in his appearance. Without being asked, somehow his hair is combed, his shirt is clean, his teeth are brushed. And, not always, but at least occasionally, his bedroom seems to be picked up and clean! Just as Timmy is proud of his Karate accomplishments, he also seems to take pride in other aspects of his life!

Introducing the USA Martial Arts Phoenix Ten Point Success System

1. Positive Role Models: The biggest asset of “USA Martial Arts Phoenix?” Easy. The teachers. Now, I’ll tell you up front. They are not like the teachers you’ve seen in the Martial Art movies. Are they “tough guys?” Yes. But what you will notice (and so will your child)…is that they are “Nice Guys.” They have been hand selected…not just because they are great Martial Artists. They have been chosen because they are wonderful people…and have a great love of helping others benefit from the Martial Arts! All of our teachers were once students at “USA Martial Arts Phoenix” themselves. They care about each student individually — and are totally committed to helping your child reach his or her potential.

2. Physical Fitness: It’s hard to feel good about yourself when you are out of shape physically…or when your athletic skills have not been fully developed. Our belief is that, regardless of how athletic somebody seems to be…there is an athlete inside all of us. When a student feels their physical skills skyrocket…it’s not long before their self-image follows suit!

3. A High Energy, Exciting Environment: Many kids have grown accustomed to virtual activities (video games, television, internet). Participating in an exciting, high energy environment, focused on an actual activity, will give your child a very real sense of achievement!

4. Regular Incentives for Effort and Achievement: The belt system of Martial Arts (your child will earn a new belt every three months: white, yellow, gold, orange, green, etc.), regular positive feedback and recognition of accomplishment, incentives for improvement, applause, smiles, and high-fives will systematically lead your child into the “Yes, I Can!” attitude you’ve always wanted for him or her.

5. The “Life Lesson of the Week”: Regular exposure, through our “Life Skills Lessons from Martial Arts Masters,” to systematic instruction, accompanied by exercises in the lessons of respect, discipline, focus, persistence, courage, discipline and confidence. (Most of the “USA Martial Arts Phoenix” parents name this as their favorite part of the program!)

6. A Proven System of Skill and Personal Development: No fancy theories or hard to understand concepts here. Our teachers are experts in teaching the actual SKILLS of listening and focus. Hint: We’ll be teaching these to your child in the very first week!

7. A Series of Positively Constructed Challenges that will build your child’s confidence. You will be delighted as you see your children confidently move outside their comfort zone. As the weeks go by, you will smile with pride as your son or daughter moves from challenge to challenge…their confidence soaring at each new accomplishment!

8. An Atmosphere of Respect: You watch with satisfaction as your children learn to give respect and to earn respect. Most importantly, they learn the essential lessons of Self-Respect!

9. Order and Structure: Even though the atmosphere is friendly and supportive, Karate is not “play time.” You will be delighted to see how your children develop focus and persistence in our orderly, structured environment.

10. A Friendship Based Environment: If you are expecting the old, harsh, authoritarian, military style Martial Art training…you are going to be sadly disappointed. When you visit us, you will find a friendly, supportive environment.

Some of the teachers and long time students have been friends for nearly 20 years. That atmosphere of friendship, support, and respect will give your
child the support he or she needs to succeed!

Phoenix Martial Arts Builds Young Minds and Bodies

Children love learning at USA Martial Arts Phoenix in North Phoenix Arizona. Our martial arts programs are high-energy, fun and interactive.

The mission of the USA Martial Arts school is to build our student’s character, inner strength and self esteem, which we do by acknowledging, recognizing and rewarding not just our student’s accomplishments and successes, but their efforts as well.

Learning martial arts is a physical and mental discipline, involving all muscle groups to help develop a student’s physical fitness as well as focus of the mind. At USA Martial Arts Phoenix our emphasis goes far beyond just learning physical moves and martial arts techniques of kicking, punching, throwing and blocking. At USA Martial Arts Phoenix, we use martial arts as a mechanism to develop positive character, leadership and life-improvement skills in our students.

Our martial arts Phoenix emphasis is on the personal-development aspects of martial arts, such as increasing self confidence, improving focus and concentration, developing self discipline, and life-long good physical fitness habits.

Children pay close attention as we explore topics that include:

No Magic Formula for Earning an Authentic Martial Arts Black Belt

March 10, 2011

USA Martial Arts kids demo at an Arizona Diamondbacks game

WARNING:
READ THIS BEFORE YOU JOIN MY SCHOOL!

As I’ve been saying all along on my blogs, in my newsletter, and on the mat, THERE IS NO “MAGIC FORMULA” that will allow you to instantly achieve an authentic Black Belt, super confident kid, ultimate fighting skill or even a ripped, toned body!

So, don’t expect my trial course to be a magic genie that will instantly grant you a magical results…

Let’s be realistic – earning a Black Belt at USA Martial Arts is HARD. You are going to have to WORK if you want to follow my Martial Arts Black Belt Success System plan to achieve your goals.

A vetted Black Belt in most systems takes between 3-5 years. For some systems it may be shorter or longer. This of course depends also on how frequently and how hard an individual trains.

Can You Earn a USA Martial Arts Black Belt?
Is it do-able? Yes! I did it, and I was an insecure kid with asthma with slipping grades in school struggling to pay for expensive martial arts lessons… I had to work twice as hard as others using nothing more than my own guts, a lot of trial and error, some “sweat blood and tears” and the few bucks I scraped together to get started. I took all that experience and developed my Black Belt Success system over my lifetime and have helped hundreds earn the esteemed rank of Black Belt.

There are many people who have joined my school who DIDN’T make it… maybe they decided it was too hard, or the process wasn’t “quick enough” for them, or that they weren’t cut out to be an authentic Black Belt…

But, that’s the beauty of this introductory trial course WEBSPECIAL – before you’re done completing it, you’ll KNOW what it takes to become a success in anything…

And, you’ll be informed enough to make a decision as to whether it’s right for your child.

Yet, there are many people who have taken the trial course, followed the system I outline, and that credit their success to following the Black Belt Success System.

It might be right for you or your child.

We invite you to give it a try today.

Children’s Taekwondo Phoenix Wins High Praise From AZ Parents and Children

February 27, 2011

Attention Phoenix Parents With Children

Hello, we’re glad you found this blog.

Is your child a Karate Kid?
Perhaps your thinkng about getting involved with martial arts. Does your child imitate Jackie Chan, Jet Li, Bruce Lee or Chuck Norris? Do they jump around like Jet Li after watching Ninja Turtles, Kung Fu Panda or Power Rangers?

Jet Li | Bruce Lee | Kung Fu Panda | Chuck Norris Most martial artists say they became interested in martial arts training from watching martial arts on television and movies.

We would be honored to have you or your child as one of our students at USA Martial Arts Phoenix. But first you should get to know a little bit about us. We are a private martial arts school and that means we select who we work with.

Traditional Martial Arts Instruction with a Modern Approach
We have time tested and proven lessons handed down from generations of Masters, Grandmasters and champions. Parents consider us a great tool on helping your child learn to be his or her best.

How Do We Help Kids Be Their Best With Martial Arts Classes?
While lots of other childrens sports and activities are claiming to instill these things, we really do. It’s natural to be skeptical and we welcome your questions and the opportunity to prove that we really do positively impact the lives of our students. Life and Character Lessons from Martial Arts Masters

WEBSPECIAL

As you get to know us you’ll discover that we emphasize the development of each childs character.

o LEADERSHIP – To be strong on the inside and learn to project that to others.
o FOCUS – For better grades, faster learning and first time listening at home with parents
o PERSEVERANCE – Preventing a quitting attitude and fostering the will to stick with challenging goals and commitments

How to Do Karate Phoenix AZ

February 16, 2011

The Karate Kid Movie

How to Do Karate Phoenix AZ
Tips From a Martial Arts Teacher

Here you will find helpful information and expert advice and resources that will help with How to Do Karate in Phoenix, Scottsdale and Paradise Valley, AZ. Get the information and resources you need about How to Do Karate in Phoenix. Includes detailed information on local businesses that provide access to Do Karate, martial art, Karate Practice, Karate Classes, Karate Instruction, Karate schools, Karate supplies.

Brought to you in part by http://KidsLoveMartialArtsPhoenix.com and http://Phoenix-MartialArts.com of Phoenix AZ

Step 1. Find The Right Karate School for You or Your Children
Do You Have a Karate Kid?

One of the most important aspects of selecting the right Karate School for your Children is to find the right martial arts instructor. The Karate Teacher needs to be good with children, have the ability to communicate clearly, be a good role model and have a passion for teaching Karate as more than just kicks, blocks and punches.

Traditional Karate | Freestyle Karate | American Karate | Korean Karate | Japanese Karate |Okinawan Karate

Each instructor has different abilities just as each Karate school has its own specialties. Some specialize in life skills, self esteem, self defense, tournament competition or cultural martial arts and Japanese, Okinawan or Asian tradition (Shotokan, Shito Ryu, Goju Ryu, and Wado Ryu).

The best way to find out is to visit local Karate Dojos and see the Karate Instructors in person and then try a class or trial course.

Look for a Karate instructor who leads by example because the teaching staff of Black Belt instructors will certainly follow suit. The experience a child has in the beginning will often determine how far as well as what belt rank they achieve. That is why it may be worth a little extra investment in tuition or driving a bit further to a better school with more experienced instructors.

Depending on your goals, it may be wise to seek out an authentic Master (Usually 6th Dan and higher with 25+ years of experience) to learn the philosophy and intricacies of the art.

Step 2. Create a Goal Plan for Karate Success

It is important to set realistic goals to achieve the benefits you want. Poor attendance or lack of consistency in training can sabotage a beginning Karate student’s experience. If you don’t feel successful or see results, it can be discouraging. Be patient, consistent and dedicated to doing your best in every class. Focus on improvement rather than perfection and celebrate all progress.

Step 3. Commit to Your Plan and Plan for Contingencies to Succeed in Karate

Everyone can go to Karate class when it is easy or they are new and excited. It takes the realization that the most important class you or your child will ever attend is the one that they won’t feel like attending. Dedication and discipline are just like muscles and must be exercised so they grow stronger. Without consistent practice and encouragement, those attitudinal attributes grow weaker. Resistance builds strength – and that goes for a child’s attitude and spirit as well. This is one of the great life lessons that martial arts such as Karate can teach. These Karate lessons will carry over to other children’s activities and sports as well. That is why Karate and other Martial Arts Black Belts are so sought after by coaches and respected by teachers.

Step 4. Follow The Guidance of Your Karate Instructors (Sensei).

Most successful people from corporate executives to professional athletes have coaches. Role models, coaches and mentors help you overcome many of the common pitfalls that would prevent you from reaching your goals. They can provide motivation and inspiration as well as share wisdom in how to overcome the typical obstacles along the way.

Remember too that Karate should never be used as punishment or linked in any way to punishment. Since it is a form of discipline, even though it may be a privilege to learn, connecting any negative experience to it may have unintended consequences (like causing a child to feel defeated or even quit) and it may be destroying a healthy, positive tool for developing great children. Keeping it part of “life education” is a key to success and especially earning the esteemed Karate Black Belt.

Step 5. Review and renew your Karate goals.

Adjust attendance to accommodate other sports, homework and activities. Remember that martial arts such as Karate is a lifestyle as well as a sport, so maintaining attendance is key to a child’s success – especially Black Belt. Discuss your goals and other concerns with your Karate Teacher to have the best chance of success. Good Karate teachers will support your child’s development, goals and dreams.
