No Magic Formula for Earning an Authentic Martial Arts Black Belt

March 10, 2011

USA Martial Arts kids demo at an Arizona Diamondbacks game

WARNING:
READ THIS BEFORE YOU JOIN MY SCHOOL!

As I’ve been saying all along on my blogs, in my newsletter, and on the mat, THERE IS NO “MAGIC FORMULA” that will allow you to instantly achieve an authentic Black Belt, super confident kid, ultimate fighting skill or even a ripped, toned body!

So, don’t expect my trial course to be a magic genie that will instantly grant you a magical results…

Let’s be realistic – earning a Black Belt at USA Martial Arts is HARD. You are going to have to WORK if you want to follow my Martial Arts Black Belt Success System plan to achieve your goals.

A vetted Black Belt in most systems takes between 3-5 years. For some systems it may be shorter or longer. This of course depends also on how frequently and how hard an individual trains.

Can You Earn a USA Martial Arts Black Belt?
Is it do-able? Yes! I did it, and I was an insecure kid with asthma with slipping grades in school struggling to pay for expensive martial arts lessons… I had to work twice as hard as others using nothing more than my own guts, a lot of trial and error, some “sweat blood and tears” and the few bucks I scraped together to get started. I took all that experience and developed my Black Belt Success system over my lifetime and have helped hundreds earn the esteemed rank of Black Belt.

There are many people who have joined my school who DIDN’T make it… maybe they decided it was too hard, or the process wasn’t “quick enough” for them, or that they weren’t cut out to be an authentic Black Belt…

But, that’s the beauty of this introductory trial course WEBSPECIAL – before you’re done completing it, you’ll KNOW what it takes to become a success in anything…

And, you’ll be informed enough to make a decision as to whether it’s right for your child.

Yet, there are many people who have taken the trial course, followed the system I outline, and that credit their success to following the Black Belt Success System.

It might be right for you or your child.

We invite you to give it a try today.

Korean Martial Arts Trademark High Flying Kicks

Korean Martial Arts Trademark High Flying Kicks

Taekwondo Master John Nottingham Flying Side Kick Punch 1995

Taekwondo Pictures | Action Pictures | Flying Kicks | Jump Kicks

The flying side kick – punch photo above was taken by my student David Goron circa 1995 at a park in Mesa Arizona near my first retail storefront school called Academy of Asian Martial Arts. On the left is James Gann and on the right is David Bravo.

From Tang Soo Do, Hwarang Do, Kuk Sool Won, Hapkido, or the highly popularized Olympic Taekwondo, the Korean Martial Arts are well known for their high flying kicks.

Beginning A Martial Arts Journey
My journey in the martial arts started when I saw James Bond perform spy martial arts moves that seemed to have magical results – even on bigger men. It was refined, dignified, intelligent and quite impressive to the eyes of a little boy.

This was my first introduction to Japanese Jujitsu (traditional art of locks, throws, strikes and pins). Later I would see Bruce Lee performing his own Jun Fan Jeet Kune Do, a composite American freestyle hybrid system rooted in Wing Chun, fencing and boxing (the beginnings of modern MMA). From the start, I loved the kicks.

Moo Duk Kwan Tang Soo Do
While growing up my bigger brothers and I often wrestled (rough housing) with one another and Dad which provided me with a foundation without knowing it. But it was my first martial art that introduced me to Korean style martial arts kicking in an art called Moo Duk Kwan Tang Soo Do (Soo Bahk Do). Today, some schools retain that branch name while many have simply gone under the banner of Taekwondo.

Advanced Black Belt Kicking
As I continued to study I had the privilege of practicing several branches of Hapkido, Hwarang Do, and several of the classical Kwans (Chung Do Kwan, Ji Do Kwan, Song Moo Kwan). In 1945 the Korean Martial Arts styles officially registered with the Korean government as various KWANS. Each has its similarities and yet beautiful differences that I came to appreciate and respect.

Is This Kicking Practical?
I observed that the kicking was not only spectacular, but it could be very practical. It made sense for smaller people because the legs give a reach advantage, are preconditioned, and generate as much as 3 or more times power than the arms.

It struck me as interesting that every-time I heard someone criticize high kicks or “fancy kicking”, it was a person who: A. Could not do it or B. Had yet to square off with a kicker who had functional kicking skill.

Kicking Criticism
Since I had the opportunity to have been booted in the head by so many skilled kickers, it seemed an arrogant and ignorant statement. Every technique has it’s strengths and weaknesses, so why was advanced kicking the target of so much criticism?

Practical Self Defense Application and Much More
Of course, self defense practical application is not the only measure and reason for practice of the art. Nor are the arts comprised only of kicking. Kicking is a fantastic way of building and maintaining flexibility, health, burning calories, expressing an aesthetically pleasing art, reducing stress and developing a respectable skill. Those are just some of the many benefits, but certainly not all. To my way of thinking, it is just one way to help develop the mind, body and spirit – and a fun one at that.

It sure beats the stair-master, starvation diets and the treadmill.

The Serenity Prayer. Have you ever read the rest of it?

August 16, 2010

Here is one of my favorites from the movie Billy Jack which starred Tom Laughlin. The movie launched my one of my teachers, Grandmaster Bong Soo Han and the Korean art of Hapkido, into international fame.

Movie fact: Filming began for Billy Jack in Prescott, Arizona, in fall 1969

Frequently quoted but rarely credited or cited in it’s entirety. According to Wikipedia it is most well known today as the serenity prayer, used by Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) since 1941 and common to many other 12 step programs. The prayer was also printed on small cards and circulated to soldiers in the Armed Forces.

Here is the complete prayer by Reinhold Niebuhr wrote the prayer for use in a sermon, perhaps as early as 1934.

God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.

Living one day at a time;
Enjoying one moment at a time;
Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace;
Taking, as He did, this sinful world
as it is, not as I would have it;
Trusting that He will make all things right
if I surrender to His Will;
That I may be reasonably happy in this life
and supremely happy with Him
Forever in the next.
Amen.

–Reinhold Niebuhr

The extended version:

God, grant us the…
Serenity to accept things we cannot change,
Courage to change the things we can, and the
Wisdom to know the difference
Patience for the things that take time
Appreciation for all that we have, and
Tolerance for those with different struggles
Freedom to live beyond the limitations of our past ways, the
Ability to feel your love for us and our love for each other and the
Strength to get up and try again even when we feel it is hopeless.

The philosopher W.W. Bartley juxtaposes Niebuhr’s prayer with a Mother Goose rhyme (1695) expressing a similar sentiment, but without comment:[13]

For every ailment under the sun
There is a remedy, or there is none;
If there be one, try to find it;
If there be none, never mind it.

Another version of it also appears in the 1950s in this version.

O God and Heavenly Father,
Grant to us the serenity of mind to accept that which cannot be changed; courage to change that which can be changed, and wisdom to know the one from the other, through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

Buddhism also relates to the Serenity prayer as Buddhism emphasizes Passaddhi which is similar to serenity. Buddhism also strives to change bad or unskillful things.

Bored with the Gym Scene?
Most exercise programs get boring. The problem is that most fitness programs fail to have clear goals or teach new things so it becomes mind-numbing. Nobody wants to be exercising like a hamster on a wheel with no interest or excitement. That’s why so many people join a gym only to fail in their fitness goals and soon feel discouraged and quit.

The Secret to Lifelong Health and Fitness Success
The success in the results of the USA Martial Arts IMPACT MMA physical training program is supported by personal development and an exciting mixed martial arts curriculum (for self-defense, not sport). The student learns concepts and receives coaching that keeps them on track like focus, goal setting, self discipline, and confidence, which are inherent in our Martial Arts training. It is like having your own personal trainer and success coach all in one. The best thing of all is you will receive incredible physical benefits and personal development traits, while receiving the empowerment that comes through the self-defense training that will be invaluable as you learn the skills needed to protect yourself and your family.

If you’re interested in traditional styles like Karate, Taekwondo, Hapkido, Kung Fu or Muay Thai Kickboxing, Jeet Kune Do and reality based self defense, USA Martial Arts may be the school you’re looking for.
