Anti-Bullying Programs Continue to Fail Children While Real Bullying Prevention Solutions Go Ignored

So called authority on Bullying admits, “It’s a mess. I want to bang my head against the wall.”

What Happens When You Get Pencil Pushers Calling Themselves Bullying Experts and Give Children Bad Bullying Advice?
Reviewing the 25 years of results from numerous studies on the effectiveness of US and European bullying prevention programs, researchers from the University of Oregon (Merell) found:

o Select programs resulted in modest improvements in students’ attitudes about bullying and in their feelings of social competence
o The study showed NONE that demonstrated a significant reduction in bullying behavior
o Researchers found that “the average teacher actually reported more bullying after intervention than before.”

What about the gold standard Olweus Bullying Prevention program?
A professor of educational psychology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Dorothy Espelage, reveals “there’s no scientific evidence to show that strategies developed for Norway’s homogeneous population actually work for the population here, especially given its diversity”. So why has this expensive and proven ineffective Olweus Bullying Intervention program the most prevalent in the United States? Why would that program be purchased with tax payer (your) money while free and less costly one’s have proven themselves successful?

Ready for some irony?
Espelage is promoted as being a leading American authority on bullying and definitely someone who falls into that category of thoughtful, committed educators. Yet, after 17 years in the field, she admits, “It’s a mess. I want to bang my head against the wall.”

With all due respect to their good intentions… they just don’t get it.

The Anti-bullying movement continues to fail children and families, yet they still receive media attention, funding and now even new laws. The reason for the failure is clear to anyone from the real bullying prevention movement, those who have been successfully helping children for decades.

The Anti-Bullying Movement Will Continue To Fail. The Bullying Prevention Movement Will Continue To Succeed. Why?

Here are just 7 reasons the anti-bully programs fail and will continue to fail children.
1. Anti-Bullying: Box the target of bulling into a victim role and children lose dignity and hope
2. Anti-Bullying: Play the blame game so children falsely feel helpless and have no power of their own
3. Anti-Bullying: Bully by making new laws, rules, zero tolerance policies which will often escalate bullying
4. Anti-Bullying: Refuse to acknowledge that bullying prevention is self defense and personal security issue – disciplines they no little or nothing about
5. Anti-Bullying: Distort reality to fit their own agenda, hopes and wishes. Denial is not an effective self defense strategy.
6. Anti-Bullying: Fail to address to core issues of the human heart, the causes of bullying and the historical precedent for what works and doesn’t work.
7. Anti-Bullying: Has an agenda that is motivated in politics and flawed ideals. While they seem comfortable with experimenting on our children, the bullying prevention movement is actively working to protect them.

Bad bullying advice hurts kids. It is the children who fall through the cracks and feel trapped from their mixed messages and failed techniques. The good news is that the Bullying Prevention groups have answers and solutions that are proven to work.

+ Children deserve dignity and respect
+ Children have power and need to be taught when and where to use it
+ Children cannot be protected 100% all of the time – they have to take an active role
+ Children can learn to prevent bullying behavior and improve their safety

It is our job to prepare children for these situations, not rely on others to do it for us or leave them unshielded, vulnerable and helpless as “victims of bulling”.

Feeling Bullied?

Anti-bullying | Stop Bullying in Schools | How to Stop Bullies

Defining bullying: One definition of bullying is…Bullying is aggression behavior toward another individual repeated over time. Bullying can take many forms including physical bullying, verbal bullying, social bullying and variations including cyber-bullying via text, internet or social media bullying. The defining characteristic of bullying is an imbalance of power where the target cannot defend himself.

Increasing research is demonstrating that school-wide so called anti-bullying programs are failing. Olweus own research, one of the most widely used bullying prevention programs in schools, shows that over 85% of bullying still goes unreported.

It is a common problem that children avoid telling anyone they are being bullied. Often, children fear retaliation, escalation, retribution, and the embarrassment, and fear of being blamed. One essential component of bullying prevention is for parents (teachers, coaches, school administration) make sure that children feel safe and willing to share information related to their safety or peace of mind. But teachers, schools and parents can only do so much. Something has been missing from these recent anti-bullying approaches that have been successfully addressed with other methods such as ours.

Children must feel safe, secure and have peace of mind if adults, teachers and coaches want them to be able to perform to the best of their abilities.

Sooner or Later, We All Face Bullying
Aggressive behavior, rude remarks, ostricization, cruelty are all parts of life we will each encounter. We can either stick our heads in the sand and hope they will go away or do our part to prepare for them by acknowledging the reality of human behavior. Children have to be taught how to manage these potentially harmful experiences and put them into a context that keeps them healthy, happy and secure. If not, they can face long term consequences that impact their choices in life in a dramatic and negative way. Fear and insecurity, hopelessness or anxiety are no way to go through school or life, especially if you are a child.

The fact is that bullying prevention is a part of self defense. Self defense is a part of living with confidence, inner-strength and an acceptance that the world we live in has inherent risks. With real self defense and bullying prevention skills, martial arts students learn to resolve conflicts peacefully, to stand up for right, and have the ability to back it up. If this is what you want for your child, consider a quality martial arts program with a qualified teacher.

Unfortunately, children are often never taught how to defend themselves, either verbally or physically. Isn’t it ironic that children will often hear that they need to ‘stand up’ for themselves, yet they are without any practical knowledge or ability on how to do so.

Martial arts classes Can Help
Children should always be taught how to handle bullies with social skills, often in a verbal manner, and with the help and support of school administrators and parents. A non-violent resolution is always the best outcome and goal of any bullying scenario.

However, it is practical and necessary for children to know self defense should a situation ever develop where a physical confrontation cannot be avoided. Without it, their efforts can come up empty and ineffective. Good Martial arts classes will teach children various techniques for blocking, breaking an attacker’s grasp, and other methods to protect themselves from injury with the least amount of force necessary to escape to gain safety. Without these options, children can resort to some horrific means to escape the terror of bullying.

“Give a man a fish, feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, feed him for life.” This is our philosophy when it comes to teaching bullying prevention. We don’t want to create a permanent victim who is completely dependent on others for protection – that just isn’t practical and takes the dignity from the individual. Instead, we work collectively to build skills, address the real problems and provide solutions that last.

Some questions to ask when evaluating a martial arts program:

Is there a firm philosophy that self defense is to be used only as a last resort?

Does the program focus on the ‘how’ rather than the ‘why’? (practical instruction, not scare-tactics)

Are the teachers positive and encouraging? (Good instructors do not make negative remarks or allow others to do so.)

Do they perform lots of hands on drills and practice? Children (and adults) learn more effectively through doing, rather than being shown or told what to do.

Phoenix Martial Arts Instructor Aims To Instill Life Skills in Phoenix Karate Kids

February 6, 2012

Why Life Skills?
Most child experts and parents agree that the increased instruction of “Life Skills education” will be pivotal in children’s futures in the years to come. From increased competition in the international job market, today’s children will need skills to prepare them for successful careers and happy, healthy lives. This is why life skills are what more and more parents today look for in a martial arts school for their children.

The Key Is Reinforcing Values Parent’s Teach at Home
The instruction being offered at USA Martial Arts Phoenix is age-specific, educational, inspiring and fun. This is what keeps kids motivated and coming back. Parents like the fact that their children are learning gratitude, international culture, good manners and building confidence. As a result of USA Martial Arts Phoenix life skills instruction, parents view the Phoenix martial arts school as an environment of higher learning and an investment for their child.

The key to effective life skills instruction is fusing traditional martial arts values, tenets and virtues with cutting-edge child development and parenting skills.

“The balance of “old and new” thinking creates a dynamic learning environment that helps a child be their best.”

, according to Professor Brannon Beliso, founder of One Merit Badges Life Skills curriculum.

One Merit Badges is parent’s solution for your children’s life skills education. At best it is a foundation, at minimum, it helps reinforce values they want their children to demonstrate outside the home. “Your child proudly show and tell all their friends about each patch they earn at USA Martial Arts Phoenix.”, says owner and Master Instructor John Nottingham. Students are attracted to USA Martial Arts Phoenix because it is fun, rewarding and they want to learn the valuable life skills we offer.

Our goals is to have parents continue viewing USA Martial Arts Phoenix school as an investment for their child, not an extra-curricular activity, offering the potential for very positive and unique relationship. For parents wanting to give their child the edge in life, be able to handle challenges like bullying, peer pressure and have the inner strength to live their values with dignity, this is an opportunity not to be missed.
