John Nottingham, owner and Director of Training Operations of Nottingham Sword & Shield Security of Scottsdale is using his bodyguard training skills and resources to educate teachers, parents and children how to effectively handle bullies. More than just a local Karate Dojo do-gooder, Nottingham has a background in the Army Special Forces Intelligence community and whose knowlege have been shared with law enforcement, military and companies throughout the world. He also owns USA Martial Arts Phoenix, a family oriented Martial Arts and Self Defense school in the North Phoenix, PV area.

The Arizona Bully Initiative and Bully Proofing Project’s mission is to address the issues of bullying and prepare Arizona children for life.

The program was initiated in 1992 in Nottingham’s chain of martial arts schools but only recently was it formed into a State-wide program and put online.

Hello, my name is John Nottingham, founder of The Arizona Bully Intervention Initiative – AZ Children’s Bully Prevention Project and author of Making Bully & Victim Proof Kids & owner of Nottingham Sword & Shield Security, ScottsdaleBodyguard.com and USA Martial Arts Phoenix – thank you for checking out my blog.

My mission in life is to help individuals like you cut through the BULL, myths and misinformation about self defense and personal safety, to ignite their individual power, increase fitness and joy in their personal and professional lives.

I believe I am uniquely qualified to help advise you in your journey because of being trained by some of the best of the best and my lifetime of unique work. Not to mention that I have BTDTGTT – Been There, Done That and Got The T-shirt!

For the past 25 years, I have personally helped thousands of men, women and children overcome challenges like bullying, obesity, insecurity, fear, hyperactivity, anger issues, lack of self confidence, slipping grades, and more.

Personally, I was the target and bullying as a child. But Martial Arts changed all that and my grades improved, I earned Black Belt, started teaching, competed nationally, achieved Eagle Scout and became a leader in my church youth group. As an adult, I attended college eventually joining the U.S. Army Airborne and teaching hand to hand combat in a Special Forces Unit. Afterwards, I followed my heart and opened my own martial arts school with big dreams and no money.

I started the Arizona Bullying Intervention Initiative – The AZ Bully Prevention Project to help bully proof and victim proof Arizona Children. My team and I provide resources and training to parents, teachers and children from our unique 5 step method of How To Handle a Bully Without Fighting.

This process has been refined over the last 25 years and has helped thousands of children deal with bullies in their school and lives. We use an empowerment model to encourage positive life, social and problem solving skills, tactical communication, anger management emphasizing peaceful resolutions to bullying.

My method was developed by putting children’s safety first then school liability – NOT school liability first followed by child safety as with many other programs. It includes elements from Gavin de Becker (The Gift of Fear), Dr. Terrance Webster-Doyle (How to Defeat a Bully Without Fighting), Doc George Thompson (Verbal Judo) and my experience helping thousands of children successfully deal with bullying.

It is the first program of its kind to incorporate Bodyguard Security tactics with the ABC’s of conflict avoidance, anger management, and the wise Martial Arts philosophy PEACE process.

Furthermore, my program won’t leave a child a helpless victim if confronted with physical aggression. Our belief is that every child has a fundamental right for self defense and that they need to be equipped should the need for self defense arise. However, physical intervention skills are only employed as a last resort, and with our unique methods, those situations are less likely to get physically violent.
