Bullying: Phoenix Arizona Stands Against Bullying with Cody Simpson & The Jonas Brothers

April 17, 2012

Stand4Change Anti-Bully Day Video

Anti-Bully | Stand Against Bullying Day with Cody Simpson

Children and teachers all over Phoenix Arizona are taking a stand against bullying.  Thousands of Phoenix kids are taking part in Stand4Change.org day, an international demonstration for an ant-bullying message.

Spearheaded by The Arizona Bullying Prevention Initiative, The Phoenix BullyProof Project and USA Martial Arts Phoenix, students are getting schools and kids on board with this timely message.  On the heels of the recent Lee Hirsch documentary film “BULLY”, the timing couldn’t be better.

Kids are seeing positive role models like Justin Bieber, Cody Simpson, the Jonas Brothers and others take a stand against bullying.  This is a way to raise awareness and get involved in something positive.

On May 4, 2012 at 12pm EST (9am Phoenix Arizona), students will join participants around the country and stand as a gesture of solidarity to show they are taking a stand against bullying. You can download a flyer at Stand4Change.org to take to your school or stop by USA Martial Arts Phoenix to get more information.

The force behind Stand4Change & Defeat The Label is Ken Kragen, the mastermind behind the 1980’s movement Hands Across America and the “We Are The World” fundraising song.  He has some big plans in the works that include a song, celebrity endorsements and a national media campaign to raise awareness on bullying.

The Stand4Change national press will launch soon. Here is a video already on YouTube.com to share with friends, teachers and administrators if you want to take a leadership role and get it started in your school.

Get Involved & Take a Stand Against Bullying

Bad Bullying Advice Failing Children. So called authority on Bullying admits, “It’s a mess. I want to bang my head against the wall.”

Anti-Bullying Programs Continue to Fail Children While Real Bullying Prevention Solutions Go Ignored

So called authority on Bullying admits, “It’s a mess. I want to bang my head against the wall.”

What Happens When You Get Pencil Pushers Calling Themselves Bullying Experts and Give Children Bad Bullying Advice?
Reviewing the 25 years of results from numerous studies on the effectiveness of US and European bullying prevention programs, researchers from the University of Oregon (Merell) found:

o Select programs resulted in modest improvements in students’ attitudes about bullying and in their feelings of social competence
o The study showed NONE that demonstrated a significant reduction in bullying behavior
o Researchers found that “the average teacher actually reported more bullying after intervention than before.”

What about the gold standard Olweus Bullying Prevention program?
A professor of educational psychology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Dorothy Espelage, reveals “there’s no scientific evidence to show that strategies developed for Norway’s homogeneous population actually work for the population here, especially given its diversity”. So why has this expensive and proven ineffective Olweus Bullying Intervention program the most prevalent in the United States? Why would that program be purchased with tax payer (your) money while free and less costly one’s have proven themselves successful?

Ready for some irony?
Espelage is promoted as being a leading American authority on bullying and definitely someone who falls into that category of thoughtful, committed educators. Yet, after 17 years in the field, she admits, “It’s a mess. I want to bang my head against the wall.”

With all due respect to their good intentions… they just don’t get it.

The Anti-bullying movement continues to fail children and families, yet they still receive media attention, funding and now even new laws. The reason for the failure is clear to anyone from the real bullying prevention movement, those who have been successfully helping children for decades.

The Anti-Bullying Movement Will Continue To Fail. The Bullying Prevention Movement Will Continue To Succeed. Why?

Here are just 7 reasons the anti-bully programs fail and will continue to fail children.
1. Anti-Bullying: Box the target of bulling into a victim role and children lose dignity and hope
2. Anti-Bullying: Play the blame game so children falsely feel helpless and have no power of their own
3. Anti-Bullying: Bully by making new laws, rules, zero tolerance policies which will often escalate bullying
4. Anti-Bullying: Refuse to acknowledge that bullying prevention is self defense and personal security issue – disciplines they no little or nothing about
5. Anti-Bullying: Distort reality to fit their own agenda, hopes and wishes. Denial is not an effective self defense strategy.
6. Anti-Bullying: Fail to address to core issues of the human heart, the causes of bullying and the historical precedent for what works and doesn’t work.
7. Anti-Bullying: Has an agenda that is motivated in politics and flawed ideals. While they seem comfortable with experimenting on our children, the bullying prevention movement is actively working to protect them.

Bad bullying advice hurts kids. It is the children who fall through the cracks and feel trapped from their mixed messages and failed techniques. The good news is that the Bullying Prevention groups have answers and solutions that are proven to work.

+ Children deserve dignity and respect
+ Children have power and need to be taught when and where to use it
+ Children cannot be protected 100% all of the time – they have to take an active role
+ Children can learn to prevent bullying behavior and improve their safety

It is our job to prepare children for these situations, not rely on others to do it for us or leave them unshielded, vulnerable and helpless as “victims of bulling”.

Phoenix Martial Arts School Teaches Children Free Bullying Prevention

March 25, 2011

Take your kid to this Phoenix Martial Arts school and they will teach them how to deal with bullying for free.

USA Martial Arts Phoenix just completed a month of complementary Bullying Prevention training for Phoenix Children at their Phoenix Martial Arts school. USA Martial Arts Phoenix along with Nottingham Sword & Shield Security are partners in the Arizona Bullying Intervention Initiative Bullying Prevention Program. Their mission is to provide unconventional Bullying Prevention advice, training and resources and teach children how to deal with bullying peacefully in an effective way.

They provided complimentary training to any children in the Phoenix community this past month. However, their commitment does not end there. They are now offering free bullying prevention lessons to any Phoenix child. They will teach their highly effective 5 step approach which includes techniques to:
o Detect bullying behavior early
o Deter being selected for bullying behavior
o Diffuse potential bullying situations
o De-escalate bullying behavior
o Defend bullying abuse and attacks

USA Martial Arts teaches a brand of bullying prevention that has been proven with thousands of students over the past 25 years. It is a research based method that, unlike other programs, does not leave out the last resort of defending yourself from physical abuse. The Arizona Bullying Prevention Program BULLY PROOF VEST program gives children the tools to cover and evacuate, just like a bodyguard. This BULLY PROGRAM also encourages by standers to be courageous and heroic. Children are taught that if they see bullying to step up and speak out, tell and get involved. Children learn when to tell, who to tell and what happens when that fails.

Founder John Nottingham claims that he believes this program is unique in that it is the only researched based bullying prevention program that is designed by professional protectors. At the core of the program is protecting life from abuse.

To get your child BULLY and VICTIM PROOFED and earn his or her BULLY PROOF VEST, parents can contact Nottingham’s USA Martial Arts School in Phoenix. You will need to set an appointment in advance or bring them to his Confidence Building Kids Summer Camp. You can learn more at the USA-MartialArts.com website or the Arizona Bullying Prevention blog.

New Ways To Resolve Bullying

October 8, 2010

Press Release – New Ways To Resolve Bullying
by John Nottingham on OCTOBER 7, 2010

Phoenix, AZ – John Nottingham, owner of USA Martial Arts Phoenix and Nottingham Sword & Shield Security, recently stated that bullying is the number-one social issue in schools today. Violence is epidemic. Our children are being taught by the media that violence is the justifiable and even honorable solution to the problems of relationships. But we don’t accept this – we can teach our children to understand and resolve conflicts nonviolently through a special program that combines the disciplines of education, psychology and the seemingly contradictory practice of martial arts.

“Recent studies indicate that bullying has increased in recent years, although it is not clear if the increase reflects more incidents of bullying at school or perhaps greater awareness of bullying as a problem. (according to the U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Statistics, School Crime Supplement (SCS) to the National Crime Victimization 2005).”

Nottingham added that Bullying includes a wide variety of behaviors, but all involve a person or a group repeatedly trying to harm someone who is weaker or more vulnerable. It can involve direct attacks (such as hitting, threatening or intimidating, maliciously teasing and taunting, name-calling, making sexual remarks, and stealing or damaging belongings) or more subtle, indirect attacks (such as spreading rumors or encouraging others to reject or exclude someone).

“Studies showed that one in two students experience occasional bullying during any school term. One in four students in primary school are bullied more than once or twice at least in any term (so they are more than twice as likely to be bullied as those in secondary schools). One in ten in secondary school are bullied more than once or twice at least in any term (some research says one third of secondary students are bullied during the course of the school year). And one in ten primary aged students are persistently and frequently bullied – possibly every day.” -This according to Sonia Sharp, an expert on bullying.

According to Nottingham, most attempts at conflict resolution focus primarily on resolving the conflict after it begins. A new and innovative way is available. It combines physical self-defense skills, which give a young person the confidence not to fight, with mental self-defense skills and VERBAL JUDO which give a young person the ability to resolve a potential threat peacefully.

Along with character building, this program focuses on understanding the primary factors that create conflict in relationships. It also addresses the secondary causes and teaches young people “12 ways to walk away with confidence.” It is a nonjudgmental, nonsectarian approach to understanding and peacefully resolving the challenges of human relationship.

John Nottingham’s USA Martial Arts Phoenix will hold these classes on every Wednesday evening in October in recognition of National Bully Prevention Month. Classes are for Ages 4-12. Class is 45 minutes in length.
