Feeling Bullied?

Anti-bullying | Stop Bullying in Schools | How to Stop Bullies

Defining bullying: One definition of bullying is…Bullying is aggression behavior toward another individual repeated over time. Bullying can take many forms including physical bullying, verbal bullying, social bullying and variations including cyber-bullying via text, internet or social media bullying. The defining characteristic of bullying is an imbalance of power where the target cannot defend himself.

Increasing research is demonstrating that school-wide so called anti-bullying programs are failing. Olweus own research, one of the most widely used bullying prevention programs in schools, shows that over 85% of bullying still goes unreported.

It is a common problem that children avoid telling anyone they are being bullied. Often, children fear retaliation, escalation, retribution, and the embarrassment, and fear of being blamed. One essential component of bullying prevention is for parents (teachers, coaches, school administration) make sure that children feel safe and willing to share information related to their safety or peace of mind. But teachers, schools and parents can only do so much. Something has been missing from these recent anti-bullying approaches that have been successfully addressed with other methods such as ours.

Children must feel safe, secure and have peace of mind if adults, teachers and coaches want them to be able to perform to the best of their abilities.

Sooner or Later, We All Face Bullying
Aggressive behavior, rude remarks, ostricization, cruelty are all parts of life we will each encounter. We can either stick our heads in the sand and hope they will go away or do our part to prepare for them by acknowledging the reality of human behavior. Children have to be taught how to manage these potentially harmful experiences and put them into a context that keeps them healthy, happy and secure. If not, they can face long term consequences that impact their choices in life in a dramatic and negative way. Fear and insecurity, hopelessness or anxiety are no way to go through school or life, especially if you are a child.

The fact is that bullying prevention is a part of self defense. Self defense is a part of living with confidence, inner-strength and an acceptance that the world we live in has inherent risks. With real self defense and bullying prevention skills, martial arts students learn to resolve conflicts peacefully, to stand up for right, and have the ability to back it up. If this is what you want for your child, consider a quality martial arts program with a qualified teacher.

Unfortunately, children are often never taught how to defend themselves, either verbally or physically. Isn’t it ironic that children will often hear that they need to ‘stand up’ for themselves, yet they are without any practical knowledge or ability on how to do so.

Martial arts classes Can Help
Children should always be taught how to handle bullies with social skills, often in a verbal manner, and with the help and support of school administrators and parents. A non-violent resolution is always the best outcome and goal of any bullying scenario.

However, it is practical and necessary for children to know self defense should a situation ever develop where a physical confrontation cannot be avoided. Without it, their efforts can come up empty and ineffective. Good Martial arts classes will teach children various techniques for blocking, breaking an attacker’s grasp, and other methods to protect themselves from injury with the least amount of force necessary to escape to gain safety. Without these options, children can resort to some horrific means to escape the terror of bullying.

“Give a man a fish, feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, feed him for life.” This is our philosophy when it comes to teaching bullying prevention. We don’t want to create a permanent victim who is completely dependent on others for protection – that just isn’t practical and takes the dignity from the individual. Instead, we work collectively to build skills, address the real problems and provide solutions that last.

Some questions to ask when evaluating a martial arts program:

Is there a firm philosophy that self defense is to be used only as a last resort?

Does the program focus on the ‘how’ rather than the ‘why’? (practical instruction, not scare-tactics)

Are the teachers positive and encouraging? (Good instructors do not make negative remarks or allow others to do so.)

Do they perform lots of hands on drills and practice? Children (and adults) learn more effectively through doing, rather than being shown or told what to do.

FREE BULLYING PREVENTION SEMINAR TO THE PHOENIX AZ COMMUNITY AT USA MARTIAL ARTS

Cost: Free – Fully Sponsored by USA Martial Arts Phoenix & Nottingham Sword & Shield Security Bodyguards

Phoenix, AZ – Master John Nottingham’s USA Martial Arts in Phoenix has announced plans for a community Bullying Prevention Seminar scheduled for 6:00 PM, each Wednesday, December 2011.

The seminars are part of USA Martial Arts Bullying Prevention initiative international to help educate our communities in preventing Bullying Behavior. With over 26 years of experience in successfully helping men, women and children deal with bullying, USA Martial Arts Phoenix is flexing its muscle against Bullying by teaching free Bullying Prevention seminars in local schools, companies and organizations.

As part of our campaign to prevent bullying, USA Martial Arts Phoenix has partnered with an international group who is largely recognized as the authority on Bullying Prevention, the Bullying Prevention International Initiative and the Phoenix Bullying Prevention Program “Bully Proof Vest”.

According to local USA Martial Arts Phoenix owner and instructor Master John Nottingham, education is the key to Bullying Prevention.

“Research indicates that 1 in 4 children are affected by bullying and the impact can be far reaching. Consequences of bullying include anxiety, depression, suicidal ideation, physical ailments, absenteeism and poor academic achievement. Through age-appropriate instruction, direct training and open houses such as this one, collectively martial arts schools around the globe aim to have a positive impact on reducing bullying and victimization”, says bodyguard trainer Nottingham.

Nottingham was once the target of bullying himself until he discovered the self-defense lessons of martial arts. Later he incorporated bodyguard strategies used to protect VIPs and other dignitaries. His first client was himself and has since been teaching and developing his methods for over 20 years.

“This program is the only program we are aware of that is designed by professional protectors and has practical elements that keep children safe. It’s practical, and easy to learn through our step by step method. At the core of the program is learning how to recognize, avoid, de-escalate and deter bullying before it begins. We emphasize empathy, social intelligence, good decisions and habits and making friends if possible. However, when push comes to shove, we can show how to effectively protect yourself effectively without going overboard and doing something excessive.”

Attendance at the Bullying Prevention Seminar is limited. To register contact USA Martial Arts Phoenix at (602) 896-8721 or info@usa-martialarts.com.

Got a Bully? We Can Help

Does another kid kick, hit, pinch, punch, trip or threaten you? If so, you may have a bully.

Does someone tease you, call you names, leave you out, or spread rumors about you? You may have a bully. But you can stand up to bullies if you know what to do.

* Try to talk it out. Say, “Why are you being mean to me?”
* Get away and stay away from the bully.
* Speak up. Say, “Stop picking on me!” and do it with confidence and eye contact.
* Make a joke. If you say something funny, even about yourself, the bully might laugh and forget to pick on you.
* Stick with your friends.
* Ask an adult for help.

Do you know someone who has a bully? Well, you can help. Did you know that most of the time when a kid steps in bullying stops? Here are some things you can do.

– If you see someone being picked on, be a friend and walk away from the bully together.
– If you have a friend who bullies, take a stand and tell your friend to stop.
– If you know someone that gets picked on, ask the kid to play with you.
– Get your friends to come with you when you help someone being bullied.

If someone is hurting a kid, tell an adult.
