How One Phoenix Martial Arts School Develops Character and Confidence in Children

June 20, 2010

USA Martial Arts students learn a unique character development and leadership program that gives children an edge in school and life. How?

1. Personal responsibility
It starts with learning that everything in a martial arts school is earned through merit. Each student wears a plain white uniform and starts at white belt as a sign of humility and equality. For safety and to create a learning environment, the ego must get checked at the door. It is not a fashion show or popularity contest. One earns respect through sweat equity, character and excellence. In our traditional structure, one cannot buy advancement or favor with an instructor and must earn every belt, stripe and recognition through behavior, hard work, character and discipline. Each student is responsible for being on time, in a clean uniform, and accountable for actions.
In martial arts, once you are properly taught, you cannot blame someone for your responsibilities. In our Academy you are promoted on merit and held back for more training if you need the time to improve. This is all accomplished in a gentle way without drill sergeant mentality or boot camp attitudes. Our actions are always in the best interest of the student and his or her safety. Our Instructors use influence rather than authority to encourage students to make positive choices.

2. Self-Discipline
Students are responsible for coming to class – even on days when they do not feel like it. This is the most important day to attend because it builds self-discipline. Martial arts teaches good old-fashioned stick-to-itiveness. Students quickly learn that discipline is like a muscle and the more it is exercised, the stronger it gets. It also adds up to great achievements, personal victories and joy in life. Quickly it transcends the martial arts school and permeates into all areas of life such as school or work. Students learn to persevere, finish what they start, and work towards worthwhile accomplishments. Most of the time students can’t wait to get to class because they love to be in such a positive, fun environment.

3. Goal setting
Our students learn the value of goal setting and working patiently and diligently toward their goals. “The goals we set are the goals we get!” The proven color belt (Kyu/Keub) and degree (Dan) rank system give students clearly established goals and recognition for achievement.
From fitness, weight loss, improved grades, to self-defense or even developing inner-strength, the belt system provides short-term goals that add up to long-term achievements like Black Belt and legendary self-defense capability. This is powerful for children as they learn to visualize their dreams and through hard work and small steps that they can achieve great things like education.
Instructors mentor students to help bring out their best, even if it means telling them the harsh truth by giving honest feedback. Accurate feedback is the breakfast of champions but our instructors are always encouraging and constructive.

4. Patriotism and Citizenship
Our students learn that the freedoms and liberties we enjoy are paid for by the heroes before us. At the start and end of each class, students are immersed in a respect culture that honors the country that allows us the privilege of practicing martial arts. At each major event, all students and guests recite the pledge of allegiance and we take time to honor those who have served. These things instill a sense of patriotism in each student. USA Martial Arts students have also been involved in numerous fund-raisers for fallen soldiers and Police officers. At advanced levels, students also learn forms (patterns) with accompanying lessons that pay tribute to American Patriots. Not only are they learning history, but they learn to appreciate an American heritage. Students learn the rewards of contributing to their community and the virtue of service above self. This also gives them a sense of contribution, pride and belonging.

5. Leadership
Students are immersed in a leadership culture. From the belt rank hierarchy of earning senior positions through time, merit and knowledge, students find that leadership in in USA Martial Arts must be by example. One of our favorite sayings is, “Who you are speaks so loudly, nobody can hear a word you’re saying.” Our leadership life skills program explicitly and implicitly equip students for achievement at any level from student government to corporate america and international business. We believe that our leadership program is one of the reasons why so many of our students have earned scholarships and been accepted to prestigious universities.

6. Manners
“Who is an honorable person? One who honors.”
Our students are taught that respect is earned through manners. From the moment a student walks in they are imbued with our honor code. From eye contact, a firm handshake, to bowing and word choice, students are encouraged to be courteous and conscientious. Everywhere USA Martial Arts students have traveled [including China, Korea and others] and trained we hear how impressed people are with our students manners. It has opened many doors and opportunities to our students as well as been a mark of class and distinction. Good manners and observing etiquette are a mark of distinction and class which indicate a level of wisdom and education.

7. Culture
Students learn culture and history from experiencing it first hand and being exposed to different facets of life in other places. This gives our students a firm foundation in education as well as incentive evaluate our own place in the world and appreciating the remarkable variety throughout the world. USA Martial Arts students also have the opportunity for cultural exchange like when the Korean Eagle Demo Team comes to the USA and our students can have them come to their home as a host family. Lifelong friendships are formed and it enriches the quality of life.

8. Language
From Korean, Chinese, Japanese to latin, USA Martial Arts students have a clear edge in their martial arts education. Some of our four year olds have amazed their teachers and fellow students at school by being able to count to 10 in three languages or greet students from other countries.

9. Self defense
We are proud to teach a traditional martial arts curriculum. However, our self-defense system is cutting edge and constantly updated to meet the needs of present day threats and dangers. One of the unique aspects of our self-defense curriculum is that it is developed by a bodyguard, security and law enforcement trainer. Our practical reality based protection is highly effective on the streets for the average person and works under stress when there are no rules. From learning to see trouble in advance and avoiding it, to learning to control situations with physical intervention tactics, students learn how dominate hostile situations and protect themselves and others. Plus, nothing beats a bully like a Black Belt with inner strength, confidence and the ability to protect themselves and others.

10. How to handle stress, fear and develop self-control.
Students at USA Martial Arts have an outlet to reduce stress and embrace a healthy lifestyle. Rather than jumping on the latest fad yo-yo diets, Martial Arts students make healthy eating and activity a part of their lifestyle. It’s not only healthier for the heart – it’s lots of fun.

USA Martial Arts students learn these lessons through our traditional martial arts program along with modern, reality-based self-defense applications.

Paradise Valley Martial Arts School Uses Animals to Teach Kung Fu Self Defense

June 13, 2010

Learn About the Five Animals of Shaolin Kung Fu as seen in The Karate Kid and Kung Fu Panda

Shaolin Animal Kung Fu

You may have seen them in Kung Fu Panda or in the new Karate Kid. What is Shaolin Kung Fu and the Five Animal System?

One of the great benefits I experienced while training in China was the culture, history and philosophy of Chinese expressed through the martial arts (WuShu) such as Taiji (Tai Chi), the Shaolin 5 Animal System and others.

I’ve also been blessed to study with a world-class Wushu Master who was the stunt double for Jet Li. The lessons I’ve learned and continue to learn are integrated into the USA Martial Arts curriculum to provide our students with an unparalleled education and unforgettable experiences.

Here are some interesting facts on Five Animal Kung Fu.

John Nottingham Shaolin Temple China

Dragon, Tiger, Leopard (Panther), Crane & Snake. There are also other variations such as 7 animal kung fu that include the monkey, mantis and eagle.

WuXing, Shaolin Boxing, Shaolin Wushu or Chinese Kung Fu are all names you may have heard to describe this expression of Martial Art.

DRAGON
The movements of the Dragon emphasize cultivation of your fighting spirit and develop your internal energy.

TIGER
The movements of the Tiger emphasize strengthening of your bones to help to develop your natural strength and power.

LEOPARD
The movements of the Leopard concentrate on the development of strength, speed and agility.

CRANE
The graceful movements of the Crane specialize in developing your balance and flexibility, and harmonize your hands and your feet. Tranquility and awareness are some of the virtues of the crane.

SNAKE
The movements of the Snake will develop your speed and accuracy. The Snake’s energy flows through its body, which remains supple. The snake appears to be soft yet strong, flexible yet firm -until the moment the viper strikes.

? DID YOU KNOW ?
Tai Chi is considered Crane and Snake. Each style has a different approach to movement and defense, and is ruled by it’s own psychology, personality and expression.

In my experience I have found that the Chinese Martial Arts are very good at helping develop balance, tendon strength and flexibility. That’s why these elements are incorporated into our classes. If you have any other questions or would like to try martial arts as our guest, feel free to stop by in the evenings or contact us at any time. We would love the honor of teaching you martial arts.

How Kung Fu Lessons Like in the Karate Kid Movie Can Help Your Children

June 13, 2010

Imagine if you could equip your child with all the confidence, inner-strength, self-discipline and self-control to help them achieve their dreams.

Picture your son or daughter with the determination, razor sharp focus, self-esteem and character of a Kung Fu Black Belt Champion.

The attitude of gratitude that shows in patriotism, respect towards parents, teachers and others.

With all the other millions of messages and influences our children get today, these lessons are difficult to deliver on your own as parents. That is why our program is so highly recommended by parents and recognized by experts in developing lasting positive habits, social skills, character and leadership in children.

No, your kids won’t get these messages from MTV, television or video games. Nor are they likely to be reinforced while internet surfing or texting with friends. These things are contributing to the pressures and problems our children face these days. …Problems like obesity, lack of motivation and responsibility, listening, and lack of follow through.

So if you are like many parents, you are probably thinking “How can I help my child develop these winning character traits, self-confidence, fitness, concentration and the inner strength to be a leader?

The answer is USA Martial Arts award-winning children’s programs. Right now we’re offering a KUNG FU KIDS class inspired by the KARATE KID movie. Kid’s are excited to learn these moves and we have an opportunity to teach them about culture, history and develop their unique gifts and physical well-being.

Plus we specialize in equipping your children with effective self-defense techniques from our personal protection program designed by a Bodyguard. No other Martial Arts school, sport or summer camp activity in Arizona can do that.

Why Every Parent Should Have Their Child Learn Martial Arts

June 12, 2010

info@usa-martialarts.com

Why Every Arizona Parent Should Have Their Child Learn Martial Arts

By Shihan Dave Kovar

I believe that every child should learn Martial Arts.

There is a reason why Oprah, Dr Phil, Dr Laura Schlesinger, Jillian Michaels (Biggest Loser), Tony Robbins, pediatricians, child physiologists, and educators the world over all have alluded to the fact that Martial Arts is one of the most valuable things you can involve your child in.

It goes way beyond self defense and can help a child in nearly every aspect of their life. Improved health and fitness, athletic enhancement, increased confidence, better concentration, better behavior, more courteous and respectful; martial arts can help in all these areas.

Does this sound too good to be true? It’s not. As a matter of fact, many experts agree that in this day and age of escalating childhood obesity, increased playground violence and deteriorating family structure, if you do nothing else for your child, you should make sure that they learn how to swim and they learn martial arts. Let’s discuss why.

Self Defense – “Practice the fight so that you don’t have to” is a phrase that is often used to describe the self defense benefits of martial arts training. It refers to the fact that as a child becomes more confident in their ability to defend themselves thru martial arts training. The need to defend themselves automatically decreases because they unconsciously begin to carry themselves in a more confident manner and that confidence is projected to those around them, making them less vulnerable to predatory behavior. On top of that, martial arts’ training includes strategic self defense as well as actual self defense. Children are taught how to recognize a potentially dangerous situation and how to avoid confrontations.

Athletic Enhancement – There is a reason why virtually every professional sports team in virtually every major sport supplements their training with martial arts. Martial arts training offer several advantages. First off, it is amazingly effective in enhancing general coordination because it uses every part of the body in a balanced way. Upper body, lower body, right side, left side, forward movement, lateral movement, rotational movement, it’s all included in martial arts training.

Fitness – The three pieces of the fitness puzzle are strength, flexibility and endurance. Martial arts training demand a balance between the three. Therefore, a child who trains in martial arts will find their deficiencies greatly enhanced. Also, because of the balance in the three pieces of the fitness puzzle, they are less likely to injure themselves while participating in other athletic endeavors.

Health – Martial arts training is a proven link to better health for people of all ages, but especially children for several reasons. First off, it is great exercise. But because it is fun, kids don’t mind doing it. Discussing diet and lifestyle habits with students is a part of martial arts training, so children who grow up training develop healthy habits that will stick with them for life.

Concentration – Very few activities engage the mind, body and spirit more than martial arts. Because of this, a child’s ability to concentrate is greatly enhanced by their martial arts training and this concentration tends to be easily transferable to other activities.

Respect and Courtesy – Due to the fact that martial arts teaches techniques that could be harmful to others if applied, martial arts instructors are obliged to stress the importance of respect, courtesy, and restraint. It has been proven time and again that children who are skilled in martial arts tend to be extremely respectful, considerate and composed.

Confidence – Martial arts virtually always lends to increased confidence in children for a couple of specific reasons. First off, there are no bench sitters, every child participates and is judged not against others but more importantly, against their own potential. Secondly, the structure of martial arts is built on the concept of setting children up for success by giving them a series of realistic, short term goals that they can attain quickly while keeping them focused on an exciting, long term goal. Each time they experience success, their confidence improves until they tend to believe that with hard work and dedication, they can accomplish just about anything.

The Karate Kid (Kung Fu Kid) Premiers and The Martial Arts Industry Holds Its Breath

June 11, 2010

“Wax on Wax Off”

Thousands of martial arts enthusiasts, practitioners and instructors are eagerly awaiting the release of the Karate Kid this weekend. For those of us who have been in the industry for a while and uphold the traditional values, we’re hoping and praying that this movie will have a similar effect as the original Karate Kid starring Pat Morita (Miyagi) and Ralph Macchio (Daniel).

In the mid 80s the martial arts industry saw a massive influx of children into local martial arts schools due to a fundamental shift in the popular perception of martial arts.

“Sweep the leg!”

The original Karate Kid captured the hearts and minds of audiences everywhere with the classic new kid on the block underdog story. It was the Charles Atlas 97 pound weakling gets his revenge against the bully with some clever twists and deeper lessons.

“An enemy confronts you he deserves no mercy.”, John Kreese (Martin Kove) of the Cobra Kai dojo

Most importantly, the original Karate Kid movie demonstrated the dignity, wisdom and life-affirming values found in classical martial arts when taught by a caring and qualified teacher. This is a far cry from the violent image many of today’s parents hold of martial arts from more recent promotion efforts of events like the UFC and cage fighting.

Rarely promoted are the lessons of good manners, compassion, honor and restraining self control, the hallmark of a classical (traditional) martial arts education.

Instead of ego driven, glory-seeking, knuckle-dragging inter-male violence jockeying for position on the social ladder, the Karate Kid revealed that our biggest battle is within ourselves. The wise Master Myagi helped Daniel Larusso learn that our greatest opponent is our own fears, insecurities and self-doubt. When we begin to understand those things, we are better equipped to handle other challenges in life such as bullies.

When the first Karate Kid demonstrated the respect, honor and age-old classical martial arts lesson of “Karate (Martial Arts) is for defense only”, mothers everywhere saw how Martial Arts helps improve confidence, attitude, and develop inner strength to avoid fighting. The coming of age tale showed how the mild-mannered Miyagi used his brains over brawn to stop the bullying and fighting while helping Daniel earn respect. The teen character Daniel ultimately learns that one can find honor in avoiding a fight and winning others respect.

Through the teaching of his eccentric mentor Miyagi, Daniel learns not only karate, but also important life lessons, such as the importance of focus, balance, dedication, hard work and the belief that martial arts training is as much about training the spirit as the body.

Try us and Get 2 Free Movie Passes To The Karate Kid

My hope is that the new Karate Kid movie starring Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan restores some of the dignity and honor to martial arts. I hope that viewers see the education and martial arts life affirming values, rather than making a silly mockery with clown-like antics or unnecessary violent messages.

Perhaps it is overly optimistic to place such high hopes as this on a film simply designed to entertain and sell movie tickets and popcorn.

“It’s not how many times you get knocked down, it’s how many times you get up.”

However, I’m still holding out hope that the film can recapture some of that magic in a bottle as the original Karate Kid film and deliver a positive message that resonates with children and parents alike.

Martial Arts stands ready with the solutions to many modern-day problems for children including: handling bullies, resolving conflicts peacefully, combating the pediatric obesity epidemic and instilling patriotism, manners, integrity, honor and respect.

The Kitten I Nearly Killed: A Cat, a Kitten and Self-Defense

June 11, 2010

Something moving! A black and white fur ball is all I saw as my headlights panned around the turn in the parking lot. I saw it just in time. Thankfully I was going slow enough that I wasn’t alerted to it with a thump.

Tonight I was returning home to Scottsdale from teaching my usual evening class at USA Martial Arts Paradise Valley when I saw Mother Nature at her best. A fluffy black and white kitten scurried into my path. Despite the obvious danger of my car approaching, his mother, wide eyed and partially crouched, put her self in harms way to protect her young.

Fortunately I had spotted them just in time and hit my brakes. The mother cat picked up the kitten by the scruff of the neck and carried him to safety.

It is situations like these that keep me in awe of our innate survival instincts and the lengths that parents will go to in order to protect their young. Male, female, young, old, all shapes and sizes, we are each uniquely equipped with survival signals and skills to be able to defend ourselves.

We have models of successful survival all around us in nature. Perhaps that is why I find it surprising that so many people in my audiences and in public have such distorted views of self-defense.

Do we not see ourselves as part of nature?
