Women’s Self-Defense Trojan Horse

Self Defense Alarmists Perpetuate Women’s Safety and Attack Prevention Myths
Are you being mislead about the truth of self-defense for women?
Part I

LOCAL NEWS REPORTER:

“The key to self defense is to be aware of your surroundings.” “Be prepared for anything.” – recent and frequently presented news report

Well thank you Captain Obvious, we are now free to move about our busy lives. Make no mistake, this is no gift of knowledge; instead it may be a self-defense Trojan horse.

We’ve all heard it over and over again. Yet, has all this alarmist hype made a difference in personal safety? I would argue a resounding yes-in an unintended dangerous way. It has probably hurt as much or more than it has helped. I agree with experts, far beyond my education, that fear-based media reporting and scare tactics haven’t helped women be more safe, but it has made a difference in adding anxiety and stress to millions of men and women’s lives.

“It can happen to anyone, anywhere at any time.”
FALSE
It can only happen when the conditions are right.

My suggestion is to demand accurate information presented without the artificial stimulation of our primal survival centers of the brain in order to capture our attention for the sake of hawking sponsorship ads for facial soap.

Accurate information such as the fact that women are most at risk from physical harm from somebody they know would be more helpful. Education such as learning to listen and act on your God-given survival intuition saves lives.

Contrary to commonly held belief, fighting back and fight for your life may not always be the best tactic. The situation should dictate the response and the more of the right kind of training one has, the more options are available when needed.

The Gift of FEAR by Gavin de Becker

For those interested in more on the subject, I recommend reading best selling author Gavin de Beckers book The Gift of Fear or his other book on learning to discriminate on media information regarding safety called FEAR LESS.

Just because self defense advice is offered as a free gift, in the news or passed on in email from seemingly credible sources, it pays to do your due diligence – especially when it comes to protecting your life or the lives of those you love. The wrong information at a critical time might be the self-defense Trojan Horse that could lead to problems. Question and verify the self-defense sound-bytes.

God bless Gavin de Becker for helping make sense of it all and giving people the tools to sort out the non-sense from survival sense.

At first blush, I thought this was going to be an article from some nut with one agenda or the other to proffer. I apologize. Your words are so true. My main mantra to people, especially women, is to be aware of your surroundings and people in them, know at least some of the tricks used by violent criminals, and understand that violence CAN happen, but not that it necessarily WILL happen. I provide some rather graphic responses to people who find themselves in a life-or-death situation, but I also reinforce that the more prepared you are to deal with violence, the less likely it is that you’ll ever have to. Great stuff. You can check out my stuff, should you be so inclined, at http://www.freeselfdefensenow.wordpress.com. Thank you and keep up the good fight.
